Football: Gaiters comeback falls short against #3
Saint Mary's
September 13, 2008 LENNOXVILLE - A second-half
comeback attempt fell just short as the Bishop's Gaiters dropped a 35-27
decision to the No. 3-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies today at Coulter Field
in Lennoxville, Que. A crowd of 1,973 saw the Huskies take a 27-7
halftime lead before Bishop's closed to within two points late in the
game. Tyler Schussler scored two first-half touchdowns
for the Huskies, on a two-yard run in the first quarter, and a one-yard
run. The game turned on the kickoff after Schussler's second touchdown,
which put the Huskies up 20-7 with 1:42 to go in the second quarter.
Gaiters returner Shantino Wilson fumbled the kickoff in the end zone,
and the Huskies' Zach Agathos jumped on the ball to put Saint Mary's up
by 20. In the second half, after the Gaiters conceded a
safety touch, the Bishop's defence started their comeback. At 8:05 of
the third quarter, Huskies quarterback Ted Abraham made a bad lateral
pass, which was picked up by the Gaiters' Dusty Burke, who rumbled in 47
yards for the touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter, Kyle Jones picked
off a Nathan Beeler-Marsman pass, and ran it back 20 yards to cut the
margin to eight points at 29-21. Jamall Lee put the Gaiters to within two at 12:22
of the fourth with his second touchdown of the day, however the Gaiters
were unable to tie the game as Jesse Andrews' two-point convert attempt
was swatted away by Huskies defensive back Joel Lipinski. The Huskies
added two field goals in the late stages to push the final margin of
victory back out to eight points. Saint Mary's rolled up 492 total yards of offence,
to the Gaiters' 257, including 356 yards rushing. Allistair Blair picked
up 223 yards and Craig Leger added 100. The Huskies used three
quarterbacks (Nathan Beeler-Marsman, Pat Hooey and Ted Abraham) who
combined to go 12-22 for 143 yards. Erik Glavic, last year's Hec
Crighton winner was a late scratch as he continued to recover from knee
surgery. The Gaiters were led by Lee, who had 20 carries for
101 yards and two touchdowns, while Jesse Andrews went 10-for-21 for 141
yards in the air. Defensively, Nick Poloniato led Bishop's with 7.5
tackles and one interception. Penalties plagued Bishop's throughout the game, as
they were flagged for 21 infractions for a total of 129 yards, while
Saint Mary's committed 11 fouls for 97 yards. The teams combined for
nine turnovers, with Bishop's committing five, to the Huskies' four. The Gaiters fall to 0-2 on the
year, and will visit the McGill Redmen (0-2) on Friday night at Molson
Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Huskies (2-0) will host Mount
Allison, also on Friday night. SUMMARY: Saint Mary's 10 17 2 6 --
