Football: Gaiters drop season-opener to #9 Concordia
Andrews sets career marks, but turnovers doom Gaiters

September 5, 2008

MONTREAL – A career-high 333 yards passing by Bishop’s Gaiters quarterback Jesse Andrews (Pickering, Ont.) went for nought as the Gaiters (0-1) dropped a 30-15 decision to the Concordia Stingers (1-0) in Quebec University Football League action tonight in Montreal. Andrews completed 20 of 34 passes, for 333 yards and a touchdown, his first 300-yard game.

The No. 10-ranked Gaiters outgained the ninth-ranked Stingers by 390 yards to 355 in the game, and recorded 24 first downs to Concordia’s 20. However, an uncharacteristic six turnovers proved to be the Gaiters’ undoing. The Stingers took advantage of the short field and turned three first-half fumbles into 17 points, as they took a 25-15 lead at halftime.

Bishop’s took a 7-0 lead 3:40 into the game as Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) scored on a two-yard run. The touchdown was set up four plays earlier, when rookie defensive lineman Kevin Kwasny (Winnipeg, Man.) forced Concordia’s Corey Greenaway to fumble a punt return, giving the Gaiters possession on the Concordia 12.

However, from that point on, it was the Gaiters’ turnovers that told the story. After a Rene Paredes field goal narrowed the Bishop’s lead to 7-3, Concordia’s William Miller recovered a Lee fumble and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown. The Stingers extended their lead to 17-7 on a 14-yard run by Liam Mahoney. That play was set up by a short Josh Maveety punt, which gave Concordia possession on the Bishop’s 30.

A 14-yard touchdown catch by Keith Godding, one of his seven catches on the night, pulled the Gaiters to within four points at the end of the first quarter. An 85-yard single by Maveety on the ensuing kickoff cut the margin to three at 18-15.

In the second quarter, neither team was able to put a significant drive together until the Gaiters gifted another opportunity to Concordia. With less than 30 seconds to go in the half, Maveety bobbled a snap during a punt attempt and was tackled on his own 29. Two plays later, Mahoney found Tony Testa for a 28-yard pass to give Concordia their 25-15 lead.

The second half was played mostly in the middle of the field, with only a Concordia safety and a Rene Paredes field goal troubling the scorers. However, Concordia was able to kill the game off with a series of long drives, as they held onto the ball for 19:55 of the final 30 minutes.

For Bishop’s, as well as Andrews' career highs for yards and completions, Godding had an outstanding game, with seven catches for 133 yards and a touchdown. Lee was held to just 56 yards on 14 carries.

Defensively, linebacker James Yurichuk (Brampton, Ont.) led the Gaiters with six tackles, including 1.5 for loss, while Justin Conn (Fredericton, N.B.) picked up five tackles, knocked one pass down and recorded two of the Gaiters’ five sacks. Rookie defensive back Harrison Maloney (Thurso, Que.) also recorded five tackles. Defensive back Nick Poloniato (Hamilton, Ont.) had the Gaiters’ only interception of the game.

The Gaiters host the No. 3 Saint Mary’s Huskies (1-0) next Saturday (Sept. 13) at Coulter Field. The game will mark the official opening of Coulter Field’s new FieldTurf suface. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
