of playoffs. February 1
LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop’s Gaiters split their final two Quebec University Basketball League games of the season tonight, as the Gaiters cruised to an 82-68 victory in the women’s game, before falling 75-66 in the men’s game. The nightcap saw the Gaiters surrender a 45-24 halftime lead, and fall out of the QUBL playoff picture.
WOMEN: GAITERS 82, CONCORDIA 68 –
Box Score After a tight opening couple of minutes, the Gaiters took charge as they went on a 12-2 run in just over two minutes midway through the first quarter, turning a 9-7 deficit into a 19-11 lead. Concordia crept back and pulled to within five at 22-17 after the first quarter. Christelle Côté's (Magog, Que.) three-pointer put the Gaiters up 30-20 early in the second, but pairs of three-pointers by Krystle Douglas and Melissa Anne Campbell allowed the Stingers to come back and tie the game at 37-37 with 1:41 left in the half. The Gaiters would quickly defuse the threat, as a pair of Marie-Ève Lemoine layups keyed a half-ending 8-0 run, allowing Bishop’s to take a 35-27 lead into the interval. In the second half, Concordia pulled to within four points at 51-47 with four minutes left, but five points by Amanda Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) keyed a 9-2 Gaiter run, as the home side held a comfortable nine point lead at 62-53 after 30 minutes, and pulled away in the fourth quarter. Piribauer led the Gaiters with 18 points and 12 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the year. Germain, Lemoine, and Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) each netted 14 points, while Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles finished with nine. Lemoine’s 14 points was her career best, as she went 4-for-6 from the field and hit two three-pointers. Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) grabbed ten rebounds, matching her season high. For Concordia, Krystle Douglas led with 21 points, while Melissa Anne Campbell scored 15. The Gaiters shot 51.9% (28-for-54) from the field, and held Concordia to only 38.3% (23-for-60). Bishop’s dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Stingers 42-21. The game marked the final regular season action for five Gaiters’ seniors, as Piribauer, Côté, Wilson, Laure Pitfield (Ottawa, Ont.) and Sarah Back (Hamilton, Ont.) each played their last regular-season games and were honoured in a post-game ceremony. The Gaiters (12-10, 12-8 CIS, 10-6 QUBL) had previously clinched second place in the QUBL, and finish with their first ten-win regular season since going 13-3 in 2005-06. McGill’s loss to Laval means that the Gaiters’ first-round opponent will be the UQAM Citadins, who are 7-7 with two games to play. The Gaiters will host the Citadins in a QUBL semifinal on Wednesday, February 25 at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
MEN: #8 CONCORDIA 75, BISHOP’S 66 –
Box Score In the early going, the Gaiters appeared equal to the must-win challenge. They held even with the nationally-ranked Stingers through the opening five minutes, and went on a 14-4 run to end the first period with a 21-10 lead. The Gaiters extended their lead in the second, as D’Arcy Nash (Toronto, Ont.) made the score 33-15 with just over four minutes left. The Gaiters shot a torrid 55.6% in the first half, while holding Concordia to only 30.3%. The third quarter, though, saw a 180-degree reversal of fortune, as the Gaiters missed their first eight shots of the half. More than six minutes had passed, and the lead had shrunk to 45-39, when Cam Mowat’s (Kelowna, B.C.) three-pointer finally ended the scoring drought.
