Gaiters suffer pair
of losses at Montreal
February 7 , 2009
MONTREAL - The Bishop's Gaiters were swept by the UQAM Citadins tonight
in Quebec University Basketball League action. The women's game was the
reverse of Friday night's contest, with the Citadins coming away 57-50
victors. The men's game was eerily similar to Friday night, with
Souleymane Diagne hitting a three-pointer with 2.1 seconds to go to give
the Citadins a 78-77 win over the Gaiters.
WOMEN: UQAM 57, GAITERS 50
The Bishop's Gaiters were unable to complete the weekend sweep as they
fell 57-50 to the UQAM Citadins. Bishop's was unable to recover from a
nine-point second quarter, as the Citadins cruised to the victory.
UQAM ran out to a 5-0 lead with just over a minute gone, but the Gaiters
quickly tied the contest on three-pointers by Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles
(Gatineau, Que.) and Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.). Lemoine put the
Gaiters up 10-8 with a short-range jumper, but the lead was short-lived.
Annick Stephanny Charles (Montreal, Que.) put the Gaiters up 14-11 with
1:48 left in the quarter. UQAM scored the last five points of the
quarter to lead 16-11 at the break. The second quarter saw the Gaiters
unable to find the bottom of the net. Amanda Piribauer's (Kingston,
Ont.) three-pointer with 2:57 left ended a drought of 8:15 between
Bishop's field goals, a stretch that saw a 14-11 Gaiter lead turn into a
30-19 deficit as UQAM scored 17 unanswered points. The Gaiters went
2-for-11 from the field in the second period, and trailed 32-23 at
halftime.
The Gaiters closed to within four points as a pair of Jessy Roy (Val
d'Or, Que.) made the score 34-30 with 6:20 left in the third. That was
as close as the Gaiters would get, however, as UQAM went on a 7-2 run
over the next six minutes and restored the nine-point margin. A pair of
Karine Boudrias three pointers early in the fourth quarter delivered the
final blow, as she gave the Citadins a 15-point lead, their largest of
the night. Bishop's chipped back to within seven points with two minutes
left, keyed by six points from Charles, but were unable to complete the
comeback.
Charles was the only Gaiter in double figures, as she scored 11 points,
while Lemoine scored 9 and Amanda Piriabuer netted eight. The Gaiters
shot 30.8% from the field, while UQAM was good on 35.1% of their shots.
Piribauer led the Gaiters with five rebounds, as Bishop's was
outrebounded 39-26 by the Citadins. UQAM held a 16-14 edge on their
offensive glass. Boudrias' 16 points led UQAM, while Stephanie Youakim
and Irline Noël scored 10 points each.
The Gaiters (11-11, 8-6 QUBL) remain two points ahead of UQAM (7-7 QUBL)
in the race for a home semi-final. Bishop's closes out their regular
season against the Concordia Stingers (3-9 QUBL) next weekend. Friday
night's game at the Concordia Gym is set for an 8 p.m. tipoff. The
return match is Saturday night at Lennoxville, with the tip off for the
Seniors' Night game set for 6 p.m.
MEN: UQAM 78, GAITERS 77
Souleymane Diagne's off-balance three-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining
gave the UQAM Citadins a 78-77 victory over the Gaiters. Diagne's trey
marked the 17th and final lead change of the evening, and came after
Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) made one of two free throws with
20.3 seconds left, giving the Gaiters a two-point lead.
The Gaiters opened the match strongly, with Hermon Tesfaghebriel scoring
eight of the Gaiters' first 10 points, as he staked the visitors to a
13-5 lead with just over three minutes elapsed. A 9-0 UQAM run later in
the quarter put the Citadins up 16-15, but a Junior Nicolas
three-pointer gave the Gaiters a 20-18 lead after ten minutes. The
second quarter saw the teams continue to match each other shot-for-shot.
The Citadins opened a four-point lead at 28-24, but found the game tied
back at 30-30 three minutes later. Tim Hunter's (Baie d'Urfé, Que.)
12-footer with 37 seconds left in the frame gave the Gaiters their 37-36
halftime lead.
UQAM took their largest lead of the night in the third quarter, as they
pulled out to a 54-47 lead with 3:14 left and forced the Gaiters into a
time out. The time out had the desired effect, as the Gaiters stormed
back into the game with an 11-2 run to end the quarter, taking a 58-56
lead after three quarters. The Gaiters' form continued in the fourth,
with Nicolas' second three-pointer of the quarter giving the Gaiters
their largest lead of the night at 68-60 with 7:14 to go. However, it
was UQAM's turn to take a momentum-killing time out. The Citadins came
out of the break and went on a 9-2 run, to pull the margin back to one
point at 70-69.
Adil El Makssoud gave the Citadins their first lead of the quarter, as
he put UQAM up 73-72 with 3:48 to go. The Gaiters regained the lead with
1:04 left as Hunter found Thomas-Anderson alone under the net, and
Thomas-Anderson put Bishop's up 75-74. With 20 seconds left,
Thomas-Anderson was fouled, giving him two chances to extend the
Gaiters' lead. He made no mistake on the first attempt, but missed the
second. With the ball and a chance to tie or win, El Makssoud drove to
the lane, and kicked the ball out to Diagne, who found himself in
unfamiliar territory beyond the three-point line. Diagne's attempt
sailed through the net, his first successful three-point shot of the
year. After a pair of time outs, the Gaiters had the ball at midcourt
with 2.1 seconds left, but the inbounds pass was not taken cleanly, and
the ball rolled away as time expired.
Tesfaghebriel led all scorers with a career-high 27 points on 12-for-16
shooting, while Nicolas scored 18. Cam Mowat (Kelowna, B.C.) led the
Gaiters with seven rebounds, and added seven points. El Makssoud and
Gregory St-Amand scored 20 points each to lead UQAM, while Diagne
finished with 14.
The Gaiters shot 48.4% from the field (31-for-64), while UQAM hit 50.9%
(29-for-57) of their shots. Bishop's outrebounded UQAM 31-29.
The Gaiters (9-19 overall, 5-9 QUBL) remain tied with McGill (5-7 QUBL)
for the fourth and final QUBL playoff spot. Bishop's will close out the
regular season next weekend with a series against the Concordia Stingers
(8-4 QUBL). Friday's game is set for a 6 p.m. start at the Concordia Gym
in Montreal, with the Saturday rematch set for 8 p.m. at the Mitchell
Gym. |
