Gaiters sweep away Rouge et Or
for first time in four years January 31, 2009 LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop’s Gaiters picked up a sweep of the Laval Rouge et Or tonight in a Quebec University Basketball League doubleheader. Women's Basketball downed Laval 72-67 in the night's opening game, before the men completed the sweep with an 88-77 win. Tonight marks the first sweep for the Gaiters over Laval since January 28, 2005. The pair of wins gives both the Gaiters men's and women's basketball teams a split of their weekend series. WOMEN: GAITERS 72, LAVAL 67 - Box Score The Gaiters scored the game's last seven points as they finally came out on top in a see-saw battle at Lennoxville's Mitchell Gym. Rookie Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Montreal, Que.) tied the game at 67-67 with 1:59 to go, before Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) scored the game-winning points 27 seconds later. Free throws from Laure Pitfield (Ottawa, Ont.) and Amanda Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) iced the game in the dying seconds. The game featured six ties and 11 lead changes, as momentum swung repeatedly between the two sides. The Gaiters led 21-17 after the first quarter, led by eight points by Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.), but that turned into a 38-34 Laval lead at halftime. The Gaiters led by eight points midway through the second, but Laval closed the half on a 13-1 run. In the third, Laval stretched their lead to nine points, their largest lead of the night, at 47-38 with 3:14 gone. Côté-Caouette's jumper stopped the Laval run, and started an 8-0 Bishop's run, highlighted by a three-point play by Piribauer. Laval pulled back out to lead 57-52 at three-quarter-time. The Gaiters finally tied the game with just over five minutes left, as Ouellet-Godcharles sent Pitfield to the net on a layup, making the score 63-63. 50 seconds later, the Gaiters' rookies combined to give Bishop's their first lead of the half, as Annick Stephanny Charles stole the ball from Laval's Myriam Lamarre, and Charles found Côté-Caouette streaking to the net and she made no mistake, putting Alex Perno's squad up 65-63. Côté-Caouette scored a career-high 11 points, while Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) led the Gaiters with 14 points and a career-high eight assists. Ouellet-Godcharles was the only other Gaiter in double figures, as she scored 11 points - her highest total in 2009 and tied her season high with four assists. Piribauer had a game-high 13 assists to go with her seven points. For Laval, Myriam Lamarre scored 18 points, while Chanelle St-Amour had an unusual double-double with 16 points and ten assists. The Gaiters shot 44.4% (28-for-63) from the field, while Laval was 37.5% (24-64). The Gaiters outrebounded Laval 41-35, and caused 16 Laval turnovers. The Gaiters (10-10 overall, 7-5 QUBL) are now alone in second place in the QUBL, two points behind Laval (8-2), and two points ahead of UQAM (6-6). The Gaiters and Citadins square off next week. Friday's game is set for a 6 p.m. tipoff at the Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville, with the Saturday rematch scheduled for 5 p.m. in Montreal. MEN:

Score Nicolas scored five points as the Gaiters pulled ahead on a 15-3 run midway through the second quarter to break the game open. He hit a pair of free throws to put the Gaiters up by four at 32-28, and extended the Bishop's lead to five points with a three-pointer, one of his four on the evening, 90 seconds later. That run put the Gaiters up for good, as they led by eight at 39-31 with less than three-minutes to play in the half, and Bishop's took a 45-38 lead into the break. A Jérôme Turcotte-Routhier layup put the Rouge et Or within one point at 45-44 with three minutes gone in the third, but a Nicolas three-pointer emphatically ended Laval's 6-0 run. A pair of fast-break layups by Cam Mowat (Kelowna, B.C.) put the Gaiters up 52-44, and the Gaiters were never seriously threatened from that point. Down the stretch, the Gaiters made their last eight free throws to cement the victory. Nicolas' 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists were all game highs. The only other Gaiter in double figures was Cam Mowat, who scored 18. Donald Lindo scored eight points, and had a career-high six assists. For Laval, Turcotte-Routhier scored 23 points, while Christian Deslauniers-Trottier scored 15 points. The Gaiters shot 43.8% (28-for-64) from the field, while Laval was 46.0% (29-for-63). The Gaiters outrebounded Laval 37-30, and shot were 20-for-23 from the free-throw line. The Gaiters (9-17, 5-7 QUBL) are now tied for fourth in the QUBL with McGill, and are two points behind Concordia, Laval and UQAM, who are all tied for first with six wins each. The Gaiters play UQAM next week in a pivotal series. Friday night's game is set for an 8 p.m. tipoff at the Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville, with the return match Saturday at 7 p.m. in Montreal. Stats Aucune équipe n’a réussi à décrocher une avance confortable lors de la première demie, a chaque fois qu’une équipe marquant, la réplique venait aussi tôt. La marque est alors 21-17 en faveur des Gaiters après 10 minutes de jeu. Laval revienne fort pour le deuxième quart en réussissant plusieurs paniers, la marque est maintenant de 38-34 pour l’Université Laval. Par la suite, les deux équipes nous ont démontré de l’excellent basketball en complétant plusieurs beaux jeux consécutifs. Trois joueuses de chaque côté on réussi 10 points ou plus lors da la partie. Jessy Roy a mené sont équipe avec un total de 14 point, Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles et Gabriel Côté-Caouette ont terminé avec chacune 11 points. Pour le Rouge et Or Myriam Lamarre a amassé un grand total de 18 point. Mentionnons l’excellente performance d’Amanda Piribauer qui a totalisé 13 rebonds. Les Gaiters retrouveront l’action vendredi prochain alors qu’elles recevront l’UQAM.
HOMMES:
GAITERS 88, LAVAL 77 - Box Score Les deux équipes ont très bien joué lors du premier quart, plusieurs rebonds récupérer par les deux offensives. La marque est égale après le premier quart. C’est vers la fin du deuxième quart que le match c’est jouer lors que les Gaiters concrétise tous leurs chances de marquer. Sans jamais regarder en arrière, les Gaiters ont contrôlé le ballon en appliquant des jeux de passes exceptionnelles tout au long de la deuxième demie. Le joueur du match du côté de Bishops est sans contredit le numéro trois, Junior Nicolas, il a terminé la rencontre avec un total de 24 points, 9 rebonds et 7 passes. Cam Mowat s’est aussi distinguer avec ses 18 points. De l’autre côté, Jérôme Turcotte-Routhier a mené le Rouge et Or avec un total de 23 points.
