Women's Rugby: Gaiters
drop close game to Ottawa
LENNOXVILLE - The
Bishop’s Gaiters women’s rugby team started the season with a strong
showing, but a late try gave the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees a 10-5
victory. Bishop’s came in hoping to avenge last year’s 41-0 loss to the
Gee-Gees, and while they weren’t able to come away with any points on
the day, they did show that this is a much improved squad.
While the Gaiters’ strength in the scrums allowed them to keep
possession of the ball and control the pace of the game, turnovers
proved to be the Purple and White’s undoing. An early Ottawa scored put
the Gee-Gees up 5-0, but the Gaiters responded ten minutes later when
Sue Magwood, a transfer from Saint Mary’s, teamed up with Katrina
McClary on a calculated switch that sliced a hole in the Ottawa defence.
An Ottawa try in the 77th minute gave them the 10-5 victory.
The Gaiters have one game this week, away to McGill on Sunday. McGill is
coming off a 4-1 season last year, but dropped their opening match 29-5
to Laval. |
