Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles

This week’s Pilsen Pub Athletes of the Week are Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) of the Women's Basketball team, and Junior Nicolas (Montreal, Que.) of the Men's Basketball team.

Ouellet-Godcharles averaged 17 points in two games this weekend against the two top teams in the QUBL. On Saturday at Laval, she scored a career-high 21 points, as she went 7-of-15 from the field and 5-5 from the free-throw line in 35 minutes. On Friday, Ouellet-Godcharles scored 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting, and also grabbed a game-high four steals. Ouellet-Godcharles is currently 10th in the QUBL with an average of 9.9 points per game.

Nicolas got off for a career-high 36 points on Saturday against Laval, as he nearly single-handedly upset the league-leading Rouge et Or. Nicolas was 12-for-21 from the field, including an incredible 6-for-10 from beyond the three-point arc as the Gaiters fell 83-75 to Laval. He also added a team-high three assists, and made two steals. On Friday, Nicolas again led the Gaiters with 17 points, this time punctuated by a 9-for-11 performance from the three-point line, and made a game-high seven assists in the Gaiters' loss to UQAM. Nicolas' scoring average is up to 18.1 points per league game, fifth in the QUBL.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Damon Thomas Anderson - F - Men's Basketball (3rd year, Verdun, Que.) - Hit double figures in both games last weekend, and had a double-double (11 pts 10 reb) on Saturday.

  • Amanda Piribauer - C - Women's Basketball (3rd year, Kingston, Ont.) - Led Gaiters with 14 points and nine rebounds on Friday vs. UQAM.

  • Laura Menard-Lee - F - Women's Indoor Soccer (2nd year, Châteauguay, Que.) - Scored her second goal of the season on Saturday vs. UQAM.

Gaiters fall out of playoff race

Men’s Basketball lost both games this week, a 80-68 loss to UQAM on Friday, and a 83-75 defeat at Laval on Saturday. The pair of losses officially eliminate the Gaiters from playoff contention.

A career-high 36-point performance by Junior Nicolas (Montreal, Que.) was not enough for the Bishop’s Gaiters to upset the #-/10 Laval Rouge et Or, as they fell 83-75 tonight in Quebec City. The Gaiters led through most of the first half, but were unable to hold that advantage into the final 20 minutes. Nicolas led the Gaiters with 36 points, with Damon Thomas Anderson adding 11. n the final home game of Head Coach Eddie Pomykala’s storied career, the Gaiters fell behind early and then saw their second-half comeback attempt fall short as the Citadins downed Bishop’s 80-68. Nicolas was the Gaiters’ top performer, finishing with 17 points and seven assists. Anderson also had a good game, connecting on five of nine field goal attempts to finish with 12 points. Women unable to sew up 3rd place
Team Statistics

Women’s Basketball saw their three-game winning streak come crashing to an end with a pair of losses this weekend: 73-59 vs. UQAM on Friday and 76-58 at Laval on Saturday.

SATURDAY: Bishop's 58 @ Laval 76

Laval clinched a share of the QUBL championship with a 78-56 win over the Gaiters on Saturday night in Quebec City. Laval broke the game open with a 16-2 run late in the second quarter, and cruised to the victory. The result spoiled a career-high 21-point performance by Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles. (Full release)

FRIDAY: UQAM 73 @ Bishop's 59

One week after falling 57-42 to the Gaiters, UQAM earned a measure of revenge on Friday evening, snapping the Gaiters' three game win streak with a 73-59 win. Amanda Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) was the Gaiters’ top performer, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. The veteran centre also blocked three shots to bring her league-leading total to 29 on the season. Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles finished with 13 points while Jessy Roy chipped in with eight points and four assists. (Full release)

UP NEXT: The Gaiters close out the regular season on Friday at Concordia (9-19, 9-19, 6-8) in a game that will determine third place in the QUBL. The game is set to begin at 8 p.m.

10-man Gaiters drop game to UQAM

Indoor Soccer's season continued on Saturday as the Gaiters fell 2-1 to the UQAM Citadins in St-Eustache.

Bishop's played their strongest game of the year, and took an early lead on Laura Menard-Lee's seventh minute goal. However, the Citadins got back on level terms on Marie-Ève Simard's goal in the 32nd minute. Pascale Chatigny's goal in the 58th minute proved to be the difference. The Gaiters were reduced to ten players when Menard-Lee was sent off, and were unable to tie the game up.

Kyriakoula Trichas, playing her first game in goal for the Gaiters, was named the player of the game.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters are back in St-Eustache on Saturday at 3:30 as they take on the McGill Redmen (1-3-1).

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Polar Bears host Alumni Game

31 players participated in the Polar Bears' annual alumni game on Saturday afternoon at the W. B. Scott Arena. The current players and alumni were divided into two teams, and the Blue team downed the White by a score of 9-8.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears will host the University of New Brunswick-Saint John Seawolves on March 14 and 15 at the W. B. Scott Arena.
