Women's Hoops upsets Laval, Men's cagers drop two straight

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

This week’s Pilsen Pub Athletes of the Week are Amanda Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) of the Women's Basketball team and and Hermon Tesfaghebriel of the Men's Basketball team.

Piribauer led the Gaiters to an upset of the No. 8-ranked Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday night in Québec City. The third-year Neuroscience major scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and picked up two blocks. Defensively, she held Laval centre Marie-Michel Genois to only seven points. On Friday, vs. UQAM, she led the Gaiters with 13 points, six rebounds and one block in their 63-60 loss to the Citadins. She currently leads the QUBL with 11 blocks this season.

Tesfaghebriel led the Gaiters with 29 points in their two games last weekend. On Friday night, he led all scorers as he came off the bench to score 18 points in the Gaiters' 73-66 loss to UQAM. He also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots before fouling out with 1:12 to go. On Saturday at Laval, he picked up 11 points and had four rebounds in 21 minutes.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles - G - Women's Basketball (2nd year, Gatineau, Que.) - led Gaiters with 15 points, including nine in the first quarter, in Gaiters' 61-49 upset of Laval on Saturday.

  • Maryse Richard - G - Women's Hockey (1st year, North Hatley, Que.) - Allowed only one goal in three games at NEWCHL Invitational last weekend.

  • Damon Thomas Anderson - F/C - Men's Basketball (3rd year, Verdun, Que.) - Picked up a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) on Saturday at Laval

  • Junior Nicolas - G - Men's Basketball (2nd year, Montreal, Que.) - Scored 26 points in Gaiters' two games last weekend.

  • Emilee Walker - F - Women's Hockey (1st year, Cornwall, Ont.) - Scored six goals in three Polar Bears wins at NEWCHL Invitational

Men’s Basketball saw their QUBL record drop to 2-6, dropping a 73-66 decision at home to UQAM on Friday, and falling 86-69 at Laval on Saturday.

Jean-Philippe Morin's 22 points led Laval to an 86-69 victory over the Gaiters. He scored nine points on a 19-5 run that broke the game open in the fourth quarter and clinched the game for the Rouge et Or. The game had been tied at 60 before the run started, the last of ten ties in a game that also featured nine lead changes in the first three quarters. The Gaiters had five players in double digits, while Damon Thomas Anderson picked up his first double-double of the season, adding ten rebounds to his ten points. (Full release)

FRIDAY: UQAM 73 @ Bishop's 66

The UQAM Citadins defeated the Bishop’s Gaiters 73-66 on Friday evening to hand the Gaiters their fifth consecutive regular season loss. Gaiters forward Hermon Tesfaghebriel led all scorers with 18 points while guard Junior Nicolas chipped in with 14 points. Sherbrooke native Samuel Johnson and forward Mario Joseph led the Citadins with 14 points while forward Kevin Boucher finished with 11 points. (Full release)

UP NEXT: The Gaiters’ next action is this Friday, at home to the No. 8 Concordia Stingers (12-10, 10-5, 4-3). Game time is set for 8 p.m.

Women fall to UQAM, upset Laval

Women’s Basketball dropped their first home game of the New Year on Friday night, 63-60 to UQAM, but rebounded to down then-No. 8 Laval on Saturday 61-49.

Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles' 15 points, including nine in the first quarter, led the Gaiters to the 61-49 upset over the then-No. 8 Rouge et Or. The win put an end to Bishop's four-game losing streak, and handed Laval their first conference defeat of the season. Amanda Piribauer won the battle of the big centres, as she netted 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had two blocks. Altogether, the Gaiters had four players in double figures as Jessy Roy and Sarah Gutzkin-Sweezey each hit ten. Christelle Côté led all players with 11 rebounds. (Full release)

FRIDAY: UQAM 63 @ Bishop's 60

For the third consecutive game, an extraordinary second-half effort was not enough for Women’s Basketball to overcome a sluggish first-half performance as the Gaiters fell 63-60 to the visiting Citadins.  Bishop’s struggled in the first half, shooting only 33.3% from the field to fall behind 38-19. Bishop’s comeback attempt fell just shy when first-year forward Sarah Gutkin-Sweezey saw her last-second three-point attempt fall short. (Full release)

WOMEN’S INDOOR SOCCER

Gaiters kick off with loss to UQTR

Bishop's Gaiters Indoor Soccer played their first-ever game on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the UQTR Patriotes at the Centre Multi-sport Roland-Dussault in Sherbrooke.

UQTR held the majority of possession early in the game, and went ahead 1-0 on Gabrielle Rivest's goal in the 19th minute.

The Patriotes put the game away with a ten-minute double volley midway through the second half. Jessica Lavallée scored off a corner kick in the 56th minute, while Maud Bellerive rounded out the scoring in the 65th minute.

Chelsea-Lyn Aboud made six saves in the Gaiters' net, while Maryse Drouin picked up a six-save shutout for UQTR.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters are back at the Centre Multisport on Sunday for a match against the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Polar Bears sweep three games in New England

The Bishop’s Polar Bears went 3-0 against a trio of U.S. college club teams this weekend at the New England Women's College Hockey League invitational tournament.

On Friday, the Bears shut out Bates College by a 5-0 score. Rookie forward Emilee Walker led the Bears with two goals, while Emily Dick, Erika Cook and Chloe Duncan added singles.

On Saturday, the Polar Bears romped to a 10-0 win over Smith College. Nine different Bears hit the scoresheet, with Jen Prokosh netting a pair, and Maryse Richard picking up her second straight shutout.

Sunday saw the Bears down the Maryland Terps 10-1. Anna Bertand scored a hat trick, with Jen Prokosh and Kayla Dawson finding the twine twice each.

UP NEXT: The Bears are scheduled to be at home to the Ayer's Cliff All-Stars on Friday at 6 p.m.
