Basketball returns to action at Concordia; trip to McGill up next

LENNOXVILLE: Bishop’s Gaiters athletics returned to action with a pair of trips to Concordia. First, women’s basketball visited Concordia for the Concordia-Reebok Invitational from Dec. 28-30, where they posted a 2-1 record. Regular-season action returned last Friday, as the Gaiters visited the Stingers for a QUBL doubleheader, and dropped a pair of close games: 72-70 in the men’s game, and a 70-65 overtime decision.

Basketball is back on Autoroute 10 this Sunday for another trip to Montreal, this time to face McGill. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men). Women’s hockey also resumes its schedule with a trip to Morrisville, Vermont on Saturday.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

This week’s Pilsen Pub Athletes of the Week are Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) of the Women’s Basketball team and  Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) of the Men’s Basketball team.

Germain was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Concordia-Reebok Invitational after scoring 39 points in three games, leading the team on all three occasions. She scored a season-high 18 points in the Gaiters’ 75-60 win over the Brock Badgers on December 29, and had an 11-point second quarter on December 30 vs. Windsor. She also led the Gaiters with 12 points in Friday’s 70-65 overtime loss at Concordia.

Tesfaghebriel led the Gaiters with 17 points in their 72-70 loss to then-No. 3 Concordia on Friday evening in Montreal. He went 6-for-9 from the field and hit five of his seven free throws. He also picked up six rebounds, tied for the team lead, and two steals in Friday’s game.

 

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Kevin Selman – F – Men’s Basketball (1st year, Pierrefonds, Que.) – Scored a career-high 11 points in Friday’s game at Concordia.

  • Jessy Roy – F – Women’s Basketball (1st year, Val d’Or, Que.) – Scored at least 10 points in all three games at Concordia tournament, and scored11 points and had a game-high four assists on Friday at Concordia.

Men’s Basketball saw their QUBL record drop to 2-3, as the Concordia Stingers downed them 72-70 on Friday night.

FRIDAY: Bishop’s 70 @ #3 Concordia 72   Box Score
A 15-footer by Concordia's Damian Buckley with seven seconds left broke a 70-70 tie and sent Men's Basketball to their third straight defeat on Friday night. The Gaiters had tied the game on Andrew Wright's (Fredericton, N.B.) three-pointer with just over a minute to play, but were unable to take the lead. Junior Nicolas (Montreal, Que.) missed an off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer that would have won the game. (Full release)

UP NEXT: The Gaiters’ next action is Sunday (Jan. 13) as they travel to Montreal to face the McGill Redmen (11-9, 10-7 CIS, 4-2 QUBL) at 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (6-10, 6-8 CIS, 2-3 QUBL, 3rd  QUBL)
Women go 2-1 at Concordia tourney; lose in OT to Stingers.

Women’s Basketball returned to action at the Concordia tournament, where they posted a 2-1 record against a trio of Ontario teams. They resumed the regular season with a 70-65 (OT) loss to Concordia on Friday night.

FRI, DEC. 28: BISHOP’S 67, QUEEN’S 53    Box Score
Women's Basketball opened the Concordia-Reebok Invitational Tournament with a 67-53 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels. Amanda Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.), Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) and Katy Germain (Val d'Or, Que.) led the Gaiters with ten points each. A slow start to the game allowed Queen's to take an early 12-2 lead, however, the Gaiters stormed back with a 19-3 run that put them up 21-15, and gave them the lead for good. The Gaiters held a 29-26 lead at halftime, and steadily extended their lead throughout the second half. (Full release)

SAT, DEC. 29: BISHOP’S 75, BROCK 70    Box Score
Katy Germain (Val d'Or, Que.) scored a season-high 18 points to lead Women's Basketball to a 75-60 win over the Brock Badgers 75-60 on Saturday evening at the Concordia-Reebok Invitational Tournament. The victory is the Gaiters' second straight at the tournament, and runs their winning streak to four games. As on Friday night, the Gaiters started slowly, this time allowing Brock to build up a 12-3 lead. Bishop's responded with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 13-12. The lead changed hands numerous times through the remainder of the first half, and the Gaiters took a 38-35 lead into the break. (Full release)

SUN, DEC. 30: WINDSOR 80, BISHOP’S 71           Box Score
The Gaiters closed out the Concordia-Reebok Invitational with an 80-71 loss to the Windsor Lancers. The Gaiters finish the tournament with a 2-1 record, and the loss snaps their season-high four-game winning streak. The game was tied at 36 at halftime, but the Lancers lead throughout the second half, stretching their advantage to 60-53 at the end of the third quarter. Bishop’s was able to close to within two points at 60-58, but Windsor put the game away with a 8-1 run as the Gaiters went nearly four minutes without a field goal.

FRIDAY: BISHOP’S 65 @ CONCORDIA 70 (OT)
Women's Basketball came from behind to force overtime against the Concordia Stingers, but were unable to prevail in the extra session, as they fell 70-65 to the Concordia Stingers. The Gaiters stormed back from seven points down at the end of the third quarter to force the overtime session, on Robyn Wilson's (Vancouver, B.C./York House Tigers) layup with ten seconds remaining. Polar Bears return to action with trip to Vermont

The Bishop’s Polar Bears will make their annual trip to Morrisville, Vermont this weekend. The Bears will play two games at the tournament, on Saturday at 11 a.m. and at 3:30 p.m.
