Basketball teams both finish fall with 2-2 league records

Weekly Release #11
November 27, 2007

LENNOXVILLE: The fall varsity season would down at Bishop’s with just one set of games, as basketball split with McGill on Saturday night. The women downed the McGill Martlets 60-46, holding their opposition under 50 points for the second straight game, while the men fell victim to a McGill comeback and fell 95-83 to the Redmen. Meanwhile, Women’s hockey went 2-1-1 and finished in second place at the Dorval Ladies Hockey Tournament.

The varsity season has closed for the holidays, and will resume after the Christmas break. Women’s hockey hosts their second annual tournament this weekend.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

This week’s Pilsen Pub Athlete of the Week is Sarah Gutkin-Sweezey (Boucherville, Que.) of the Women’s Basketball team. She came off the bench to score a game-high 15 points in the Gaiters’ 60-46 win over McGill on Saturday night, thanks to a 3-for-5 performance from the three-point line. She also picked up six rebounds and had one blocked shot.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Jessy Roy – F – Women’s Basketball (1st year, Val d’Or, Que.) – Scored 12 points and had a game-high five assists on Saturday vs. McGill

  • Junior Nicolas – G – Men’s Basketball (3rd year, Montreal, Que.) – Scored a game-high 28 points in Saturday’s game against McGill.

  • Hermon Tesfagehbriel – F – Men’s Basketball (3rd year, Coquitlam, B.C.) – Scored 24 points off the bench vs. McGill on Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (6-7, 6-6 CIS, 2-2 QUBL, T-1st QUBL)
Gaiters lose halftime lead, fall 95-83 to McGill

Men’s Basketball saw their QUBL record drop to 2-2, as they were downed by McGill on Saturday.

SATURDAY: McGill 95 @ Bishop’s 83
A dominant first-half performance by the Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team wasn't enough to offset a second half-collapse, as the Gaiters fell 95-83 to the visiting McGill Redmen on Saturday evening. A combined 52 points by Gaiter teammates Junior Nicolas (28 points) and Hermon Tesfaghebriel (24 points) failed to prevent the Redmen from erasing a 14-point halftime deficit and handing the Gaiters their second straight defeat. (Full release…)

UP NEXT: Bishop’s is idle until the New Year. Their first action in 2008 will be a visit to Concordia on Friday, January 4 at Concordia at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (4-8, 4-6 CIS, 2-2 QUBL, 2nd QUBL)
Strong defence keys women’s second straight win.

Women’s Basketball evened their QUBL record at 2-2 with a second straight 14-point win, this one over McGill on Saturday night.

SATURDAY: McGill 46 @ Bishop’s 60
Women’s Basketball closed the fall portion of their 2007-2008 QUBL season on a high note Saturday evening, handily defeating the visiting McGill Martlets 60-46 to earn their second straight win.

The Gaiters jumped out to an early lead, outscoring McGill 24-13 in the first quarter. The Gaiter defence dominated the second quarter, holding the Martlets to only four points, as Bishop’s took a 34-17 halftime lead. Although the Gaiters’ offence cooled off in the second half, they were able to withstand a late McGill rally and come away with the win. (Full release…)

UP NEXT: Women’s Basketball is off for the Christmas break, and will return to action from December 28-30 at the Concordia Reebok Invitational.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Polar Bears go 2-1-1 at Dorval tourney, lose in championship game

The Bishop’s Polar Bears made their annual trip to the Dorval Tournament, and came away with a silver medal. On Friday night, the Polar Bears downed TMR 2-1, with goals from Sarah Bennett and Anna Bertrand. On Saturday, the Bears were shut out 2-0 by Jello, the defending tournament champions, but rebounded to tie the Incroyables 1-1 later in the day with Sara Owens scoring for Bishop’s.

In Sunday’s final, the Bears faced another serving of Jello, and took an early 2-1 lead against their more experienced opponents, but it the lead did not last. Jello found greater consistency later in the game, and came away with a 6-3 victory. Lisa Kennedy, Jen Prokosh and Emilee Walker scored the Polar Bears’ goals. Maryse Richard played all four games in net for the Bears, posting a 2-1-1 record and a 2.50 goals-against average.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears host their second annual tournament this weekend at the W.B. Scott Arena. Game dates and times are posted here.
