Men’s Lacrosse won their quarter-final game 9-8 over McMaster in triple overtime on Friday, but fell 13-12 to the eventual champions from Brock in their semifinal on Saturday. Meanwhile, women’s basketball completed their preseason preparations with a two-game trip to Vermont, dropping a pair of games to NCAA opposition. This week at Bishop’s see Men’s Rugby travel to McGill on Saturday afternoon for the QSSF Rugby Championship. On Friday, the Gaiters will host the Laval Rouge et Or. The games will be a fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Society, as part of an effort by all CIS women’s basketball programs this season. On Saturday, basketball hits the road for a doubleheader at the UQAM Citadins. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: This week’s Pilsen Pub Athlete of the Week is Mike Dubé of the Men’s Lacrosse team. He led the Gaiters with seven goals over two games at the CUFLA Championship tournament in Toronto. He picked up three goals in Friday’s 9-8 (3OT) win over McMaster, and had a four-goal performance in Saturday’s 13-12 loss to Brock. HONOUR ROLL:
GAITERS TO HOST BREAST CANCER FUNDRAISER ON FRIDAY NIGHT The Gaiters’ regular-season basketball home opener on Friday night will be a fundraiser for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. This is part of a cross-Canada initiative by CIS women’s basketball programs, and is one of more than 30 such events this season. The initiative was the brainchild of Bishop's University head coach Rod Gilpin. "We were raising money through our pre-season exhibition tournament in support of legendary University of Victoria coach Kathy Shields. In talking to other CIS coaches we realized we were not the only program doing this and it only made sense that the WBCA take on this project nationwide,” he said. Tip-off for the women’s game is at 6 p.m. JAMALL LEE & LEROY BLUGH COP QUFL MAJOR AWARDS Lennoxville, Que. – Bishop’s Gaiters running back Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Terry Fox S.S.) and head coach Leroy Blugh have been honoured as major award winners by the Quebec University Football League. Commissioner Tom Allen made the announcement at a press conference in Lennoxville on Monday. Lee was awarded the Jeff Russel Trophy, given to the league’s most outstanding player, while Blugh was named QUFL Coach of the Year. Lee, a third-year Sociology major, set a Quebec single-season record with 1464 yards rushing, breaking Larry Smith’s previous provincial record of 1050 yards. Lee’s total is also the fifth-highest total in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) history. Lee also set a new QUFL record with 181 carries, breaking the old mark of 176 (Joseph Mroué, Montréal, 2005). Lee ran for 12 touchdowns on the season, a school record and the second-highest total in QUFL history, and had seven runs of 50 yards or more, including three on Sept. 15 against Sherbrooke. Blugh, 41, was named QUFL Coach of the Year by a vote of coaches, athletic directors and media. Blugh led Bishop’s to a 5-3 record this year, the Gaiters’ first winning season since 1995, and their first playoff appearance since 2002. Under his watch, Bishop’s appeared in the CIS Top Ten for the first time since 1998, rising as high as #6, and finished the season in the Top Ten for the first time since 1995. The Gaiters also put together a five-game winning streak for the first time since 1997-98. The announcement was made by the QSSF office last week. Aboud, a fourth-year Social Sciences student, played in all 14 of the Gaiters' games this season, and was named Game MVP on three occasions. Her on-field performances were highlighted by a 12-save shutout of the then #5-ranked McGill Martlets on September 16, and a seven-save victory over the UQTR Patriotes on September 7th. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2-6, 2-4 CIS) Women drop two in Vermont, QUBL season openers on tap Women’s Basketball dropped a pair of games in Vermont last week against NCAA opposition. On Friday, they were dumped 76-51 by the Saint Michael’s College Purple Knights, and on Saturday, they fell 62-51 to the Vermont Catamounts. This week, the Lady Gaiters open up the QUBL season with games on Friday and Saturday.
FRIDAY:
Bishop’s 51 @ St. Michael’s (VT) 76 The Gaiters were missing forwards Amanda Piribauer and Tina Smith due to injury, and the lack of depth up front hurt them when faced with the Purple Knights' strong inside play and aggressive zone pressure defence. Bishop's committed 15 first-half turnovers, and were outrebounded 28-15 on their offensive glass. Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) led the Gaiters offensively with 10 points, while Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) added seven. Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) picked up six points and her seven rebounds tied with Sarah Gutkin-Sweezey (
SATURDAY: Bishop’s 51 @ Vermont 62 The Gaiters got out to a strong start, pulling out to a 7-2 lead in the first 3:30. However, the Gaiters’ early shooting touch deserted them, as the Catamounts held Bishop’s scoreless for a nine-minute stretch. Vermont outscored Bishop’s 17-0 during that run, and turned a 14-12 deficit into a 29-14 lead. In the first half, Bishop’s shot only 25% from the field and committed 17 turnovers. Early in the second half, UVM stretched the lead out to as many as 22, but an 8-2 run put the Gaiters to win 12 points with seven minutes to go. However, Bishop’s was unable to cut the deficit to single digits until the last minute of the game, and the Catamounts came away with the 11-point win. Jessy Roy led the Gaiters with ten points, while Courtney Cook (Maple Ridge, B.C.) had nine and Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) picked up eight. Robyn Wilson’s ten rebounds led the Gaiters, and shared the game high with Vermont’s Nicole Trott. Amy Rosencratz led UVM with 16 points, with Sy Janousek adding 13. UP NEXT: Women’s Basketball will open the QUBL season on Friday night as they host Laval (5-1) at 6 p.m. at the Mitchell Gym. The game is a fundraiser for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. On Saturday, the Gaiters travel to Montreal to face the UQAM Citadins (4-4). MEN’S RUGBY (5-4-0, 4-4-0 CIS, 3rd QSSF) Gaiters defeat Vert et Or 10-7 to advance to conference finals
SUNDAY
– Bishop’s 10 @ Sherbrooke 7 After a scoreless first half which saw the two teams tied at 0-0, the Gaiters jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the second half and withstood a late Sherbrooke rally to earn the victory. “I think that the difference between today’s game and the previous two games was that we were a bit more prepared and we were able to get three good weeks of practice in for this game,” said assistant coach Charles Goode. “Unlike Sherbrooke, most of our guys don’t play on club teams in the off-season so I think we were a bit rusty early in the season.” “We played smart, mistake-free rugby. It was a real team effort and I’m proud of the way our guys played. We didn’t get down on ourselves when things didn’t go our way and we were able to beat a very good Sherbrooke team.” Goode added that he was particularly impressed with the work of his wingers as well as centre Sean McLelland (Oakville, Ont.) and forward Sam Campbell (Toronto, Ont.). - Recap written by Sean O’Neill UP NEXT: Men’s Rugby has advanced to the QSSF Championship. The Gaiters will face the McGill Redmen (9-0, 8-0) this Saturday (Nov. 10) at 1 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium. This is Bishop’s first appearance in the QSSF Championship since the 2005 season, when they also faced the Redmen for the league title. LACROSSE (8-3, 5-1 CUFLA East) Lacrosse edges McMaster in quarters, old nemesis Brock strikes again in semis The Gaiters’ lacrosse team’s trip to the CUFLA Final Six ended a day earlier than hoped, as they dropped a 13-12 decision to the Brock Badgers in a CUFLA semifinal on Saturday. For the sixth straight year, the Gaiters’ playoffs has ended at the hands of the Badgers. On Friday, the Gaiters needed two sudden-death overtime periods to get past the McMaster Marauders by a score of 9-8.
SATURDAY – Brock 13 vs. Bishop’s 12 The Gaiters won 17 of 23 faceoffs in the game, but Brock had a 32-20 advantage on loose balls. Mike Dubé and Jimmy Salvall led the Gaiters with four goals each, while Josh Crone had three and Andy Barber netted a single. Brennan Durovick had ten saves in the Gaiter net. FRIDAY - Bishop's 9
vs. McMaster 8 (3OT) The Gaiters came out slowly, and trailed the Marauders 2-0 after one quarter and 4-1 at halftime. After the first 40 minutes, the Gaiters had taken fewer shots (3) than McMaster had scored goals. Brennan Durovick's 13-save effort on the evening kept the Gaiters in the game, and set the stage for the Gaiters' fourth-quarter comeback. Bishop's outscored McMaster 4-1 in the final frame to send the game into overtime. The first two (non-sudden-death) overtime periods were scoreless. An apparent go-ahead goal by Jimmy Southall in the second period was disallowed due to his stick having too deep a pocket. Durovick made four saves in the four-minute period to keep the scores level. Nothing was resolved in the first period of sudden-death overtime, and it wasn't until Gattellaro's shot took a strange bounce off the St. Michael's College turf, froze the Marauders goalie and tickled the top corner of the net that a resolution was reached. Mike Dubé led the Gaiters' scorers with three goals, while Jimmy Southall added two, and Jordan Blaser, Josh Crone and Andy Barder joined Gattellaro with one goal each. UP NEXT: Lacrosse has concluded its 2007-08 season. WOMEN’S HOCKEY (1-2) Polar Bears down Morrisville Motley Crew The Polar Bears traveled to Morrisville, Vermont on Sunday to renew an old rivalry with the Motley Crew team. Scott Arena at 6 p.m. THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE: Friday, November 9
