Weekly Release #7
October 30, 2007

LENNOXVILLE: This week at Bishop’s saw the football Gaiters finish the regular season, and for the first time in five years, start preparing for the playoffs. Football lost 21-13 to the Montreal Carabins, sending them on the road for the playoffs. Men’s Rugby finished the regular season with a win over Concordia, giving them third place in the QSSF. Women’s Soccer closed out their season with a draw at Concordia on Sunday, after being shut out by Laval on Friday. Men’s Basketball concluded their non-conference schedule with a split at the Hawk Challenge in Waterloo. Finally, Men’s Lacrosse won their first-round playoff game, and advanced to the Baggataway Cup tournament in Toronto.

This week sees playoff action on three fronts for the Gaiters. Football visits the Concordia Stingers on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a QUFL semifinal game, while Men’s Rugby goes across town to face the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in a QSSF Rugby semifinal on Sunday at 1 p.m. Men’s Lacrosse heads down to Toronto for the Baggataway Cup tournament, starting on Friday at 8:30 with a quarter-final against McMaster. Women’s Basketball concludes their preseason schedule with a two-game road trip to Vermont. They will face St. Michael’s on Friday and the University of Vermont on Saturday, while men’s basketball has the week off.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

This week’s Pilsen Pub Athlete of the Week is Sam Campbell (Toronto, Ont.) of the Men’s Rugby team. Campbell, a 3rd-year forward, kicked the winning penalty goal with no time left as the Gaiters downed the Concordia Stingers 15-13 and clinched third place in the QSSF.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Linda Guerrera – MF – Soccer (1st year, Montreal, Que.) – Scored game-tying goal on Sunday, was BU player of the game on Friday.

  • Jamall Lee – RB – Football (3rd year, Port Coquitlam, B.C.) – Ran for 186 yards and one touchdown on Saturday vs. Montreal, to finish the season with 1464 yards rushing, a new Quebec record.

Sue Magwood named Quebec Women’s Rugby All-Star

The third-year Inside Centre tied for the Gaiters lead in scoring, and led the team offensively and defensively. Magwood was named Bishop’s team MVP in two of their six games this season. Coach Eryn Hessian said “her play both makes the players around her better and encourages them to strive to improve”.

FOOTBALL (5-3, T-2nd QUFL)

Carabins edge #9 Gaiters 21-13
Jamall Lee rushes for 176 yards in losing effort

Lennoxville, Saturday, October 27, 2007 – Five weeks after falling at home 24-5 to the Bishop’s Gaiters, the Université de Montreal Carabins got a measure of revenge on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Gaiters 21-13 before 2,169 at Coulter Field.

Montreal opened the scoring early in the first quarter when receiver Frank Bruno returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown. After a pair of conceded safeties made the score 7-4, running back Jamall Lee gave Bishop’s an 11-7 lead on a spectacular 75-yard touchdown run. [Full release…]

UP NEXT: The Gaiters head up Autoroute 10 to Montreal to face the second-place Concordia Stingers (5-3) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the QUFL Semifinal. This is the Gaiters’ first playoff game since 2002, and they will be seeking their first playoff win since 1994.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (4-5, 4-4 CIS)

Gaiters split at Laurier

Men’s Basketball concluded their non-conference schedule with a weekend trip to the Hawk Challenge in Waterloo, Ont. On Friday, the Gaiters lost to the Windsor Lancers 87-68. On Saturday, the Gaiters outlasted the host Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 118-114 in triple overtime.

FRIDAY: Windsor 87 vs. Bishop’s 68
The Windsor Lancers, last year’s OUA West champions, picked up their second win of the season over the Gaiters with a 19-point victory on Friday night. The Lancers raced out to a 31-16 lead and never looked back, cruising to the 19-point win. Damon Thomas Anderson led the Gaiters with 17 points, while Emmanuel Junior Nicolas had 16. The Lancers had four players in double digits, led by Kevin Kloostra’s game-high 19 points.

SATURDAY: Bishop’s 118 at Wilfrid Laurier 114 (3OT)

Bishop’s concluded their preseason with a game that simply refused to end. Junior Nicolas led the Gaiters with 28 points, but fouled out with three minutes left in regulation. Hermon Tesfaghebriel picked up 26 points, including going 13-from-14 from the line, while Andrew Wright (18), Doug McCooeye (17 pts, 12 rebs) and Damon Thomas Anderson each hit double digits. Bishop’s led 67-56 after three quarters, but a WLU comeback tied the game at 76 after regulation. Bishop’s held a 91-88 lead late in the first overtime, but Dominique Brown hit three free throws with no time left to force a second bonus frame. That period also solved nothing, as the teams finished tied at 105. The Gaiters finally pulled away in the third overtime, making six of eight free throws late to clinch the victory.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters are off this week. The QUBL season opens up on Friday, November 9th as Bishop’s hosts the Laval Rouge et Or. That will be followed by a game in Montreal against the UQAM Citadins on Saturday, November 10.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2-4)

Women idle last week, two games in Vermont await

Women’s Basketball was idle this week, but will conclude their pre-season schedule this weekend with a two-game trip to Burlington, Vermont, where the Lady Gaiters will face a pair of NCAA opponents

UP NEXT: Women’s Basketball takes on St. Michael’s (11-16 last season), a Division II school, on Friday at 5 p.m. They will follow that up with a visit to the Division I Vermont Catamounts (19-12 last season) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-10-3, 8th QSSF)

Soccer ends season with a draw at Concordia

Women’s Soccer was in action twice last week, a 6-0 home loss to the Laval Rouge et Or, and a 2-2 draw at the Concordia Stingers on Sunday.

FRIDAY – Laval 6 @ Bishop’s 0
Women's Soccer closed out the home schedule suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Laval Rouge et Or on Friday afternoon. Laval took a 3-0 lead in the first 16 minutes of game on goals by Genevieve Lambert and two from Francine Brousseau. The Gaiters mounted some pressure on early in the second half, and were unlucky not to score. Their best chance came on a free kick, when Lauren Proudfoot’s shot from 25 yards away bounced off the crossbar. The Rouge et Or put the game away with three late goals, including two from Marie-Michelle Vallée and one from Monica Boudreau.

SUNDAY – Bishop’s 2 @ Concordia 2
The Gaiters closed the season with a 2-2 draw at Concordia on Sunday afternoon. Bishop’s got on the board in the seventh minute, but Concordia tied the game two minutes later and took the lead just before halftime. Linda Guerrera tied the game for the Gaiters with a goal in the 56th minute.

UP NEXT: Women’s Soccer has concluded their 2007-08 season.

RUGBY (Men 4-4-0, 3rd QSSF; Women 0-6-0, 6th QSSF)

Men down Concordia, will face Sherbrooke in semis

MEN – FRIDAY  – Bishop’s 15 @ Concordia 13
Sam Campbell’s penalty kick on the last play gave the Gaiters the two-point win at Concordia Stadium on Friday night, their second comeback win of the year over Concordia. The Gaiters were led by Mike Orlando, who made his presence felt on both sides of the ball. Defensively, he was the Purple and White’s leading tackler, and offensively he ran through numerous Stinger tacklers.

UP NEXT: Men’s Rugby’s next action is the QSSF Semifinal at Sherbrooke (5-3) on Sunday at 1 p.m. The teams met twice this season, with the Vert & Or winning both times (14-0 at Sherbrooke, 7-0 at Bishop’s).

LACROSSE (5-1, T-1st CUFLA East)

Lacrosse dumps Western in first round, off to Toronto for CUFLA Final 6

The Gaiters’ lacrosse team started their playoffs last week, posting a 10-7 win over the Western Mustangs on Saturday.

SATURDAY – Western 7 @ Bishop’s 10
Bishop’s took care of business on a soggy Optimist Park field. The Gaiters took a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, but another second-quarter letdown led to a 4-4 game at halftime. However, Bishop’s pulled away in the second half, as they held the Mustangs to only three goals in the final 40 minutes.

UP NEXT: For the sixth straight year, Lacrosse has advanced to the Baggataway Cup tournament in Toronto. The Gaiters have been the CUFLA finalists in four of the past five years, with the only exception being a semi-final loss in 2005. The Gaiters have been seeded 4th of the six teams, and will face #5 McMaster in the quarter-final.
