Gaiters trounce Acadia & ETS, Basketball picks up their first wins

Weekly Release #5
October 16, 2007

LENNOXVILLE: This week at Bishop’s saw the football Gaiters continue to roll on, picking up their fifth consecutive victory, this one a 42-17 victory over the Acadia Axemen. Men’s Rugby got their season back on track with a 63-0 drubbing of ETS, while Women’s Rugby wound their season down with a 10-5 loss at Sherbrooke. Men’s Basketball went 1-2 at the McGill Redbird Classic, to finish in third place, while the women finished fourth at the Ryerson Rams Classic, after also going 1-2. Women’s Soccer had mixed results, playing the UQAM Citadins to a draw before falling to the UQTR Patriotes. Finally, Men’s Lacrosse found their form again, sweeping a weekend road trip to Ontario.

Some of the Gaiters return home this week, as women’s soccer hosts McGill on Sunday afternoon, and Men’s Lacrosse hosts Queen’s and Carleton. The travels continue for the rest of the squads, however. Football heads up to Quebec City to take on top-ranked Laval on Sunday at 1p.m., while Men’s Rugby heads to Montreal to face undefeated McGill, also on Sunday at 1. The Gaiters’ cagers continue their non-conference schedule, as the men travel to New Brunswick for the Eric Garland Invitational, while the women head west for the Alberta Pandas Hoopfest.

This week’s Pilsen Pub Athlete of the Week is Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C.). The third-year running back led the Gaiters to their 42-17 win over the Acadia Axemen. With 266 yards rushing, he beat the QUFL single-season rushing record, and his four touchdowns gave him the all-time school record for career rushing touchdowns.

The Gaiters led 41-31 at the half, but were outscored 25-10 in the third quarter as the Lancers came from behind to record the win. Nicolas led all scorers with his 32 point performance, including five three-pointers and also added three steals. SUNDAY: Bishop’s 58 @ McGill 90
The Gaiters wound up the tournament by falling 90-58 to the McGill Redmen, the tournament champions. The teams were tied at 17 after the first quarter, but an 11-1 run for McGill in the second put the Redmen up by 19 at halftime, and they cruised to the 32-point victory. Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) led the Gaiters with 24 points and six rebounds, while Cam Mowat added nine points.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters travel down east to UNB for the Eric Garland National Tournament. Bishop’s opens the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. (all times Atlantic) against the UPEI Panthers. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (1-2)
Women finish fourth at Ryerson, head to Edmonton this week

Women’s Basketball opened their season with a trip to the Ryerson Rams Classic in Toronto. On Friday, they defeated the Guelph Gryphons 76-59. In the semi-finals, the Gaiters were downed 65-45 by the Dalhousie Tigers, and on Sunday they lost the Bronze Medal game 73-60 to the McMaster Marauders.

Courtney Cook (Maple Ridge, B.C.) also added ten points for the Gaiters, who out-rebounded Guelph 44-25. After building a 37-25 halftime lead, the young Gaiters were able to go deep into the rotation, as all 11 players saw at least eight minutes of action, and no player played more than 24 minutes. Heather Angus led Guelph with 19 points.

SATURDAY – Dalhousie 65 vs. Bishop’s 45
Women's Basketball fell 65-45 to the Dalhousie Tigers in the semi-finals of the Ryerson Rams Classic. Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) led the Gaiters with nine points, while Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) picked up eight in a losing cause. Dalhousie's Alex Legge led all scorers with 15 points.

SUNDAY McMaster 73 vs. Bishop’s 60
The Gaiters were defeated 73-60 by the McMaster Marauders in the Bronze Medal game. The Marauders held a three point lead (36-33) at the half, but pulled away thanks to a 27-point third quarter. The Marauders’ fast-break ability proved to be the difference in the game. Katy Germain led the Gaiters with 16 points, while Amanda Piribauer had a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters head out west to Edmonton to face a trio of Canada West foes at the Alberta Pandas Hoopfest. Bishop’s opens the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. (all times Mountain) against the Regina Cougars. On Saturday, the Gaiters will face the host Alberta Pandas at 6 p.m., and on Sunday Bishop’s takes on the Saskatchewan Huskies at 11 a.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-7-2, 8th QSSF)
Soccer picks up one point from two games

Women’s Soccer was in action twice last week, a 1-1 draw at the Montréal Carabins, and a 2-1 loss at UQTR on Sunday.

FRIDAY – Bishop’s 1 @ Montréal 1
Women's Soccer put an end to their five-game losing streak tonight as they played to a 1-1 draw with the UQAM Citadins in Montréal. Myriam Da Silva Rondeau put the Citadins up 1-0 in the second minute of the game, but the Gaiters' Casey Walsh responded in the 11th minute. From that point on, goalkeeper Chelsea-Lyn Aboud and the Gaiters' defence barred the gates, as the Gaiters picked up their first point since a 0-0 draw with McGill on Sept. 16th.

SUNDAY – Bishop’s 1 @ UQTR 2
The Gaiters were defeated 2-1 by the UQTR Patriotes on Sunday in Trois-Rivières. Lisa Wagner put the Gaiters up 1-0 with a goal in the 25th minute, but two second-half goals by UQTR gave the host squad the spoils. Goalkeeper Chelsea-Lyn Aboud was Bishop’s player of the game, while Gabrielle Côté was the MVP for UQTR.

UP NEXT: Women’s Soccer again plays twice this week. First up is another Friday night trip to Montréal, this time to take on the UdeM Carabins (6-1-3) at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Gaiters will host the McGill Martlets (5-1-4) in a 1 p.m. kickoff at the Wilson Soccer Pitch.

RUGBY (Men 3-3-0, 3rd QSSF; Women 0-6-0, 6th QSSF)
Men win handily; women lose a close match on Sunday

MEN – SUNDAY – Bishop’s 63 @ ETS 0
Men’s Rugby put an end to their two-game losing streak with a 63-0 win over the ETS Piranhas on Sunday at Ste-Julie. With the win, the Gaiters remain in third place in the QSSF, and have now clinched a playoff spot.
UP NEXT: Men’s Rugby’s next action is in Montréal against the McGill Redmen (6-0-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN – SUNDAY Bishop’s 5 @ Sherbrooke 10
Women’s Rugby concluded their season with a 10-5 defeat at the hands of the Sherbrooke Vert & Or. The Gaiters were unable to turn a strong first half into points, and that cost them as they spent most of the second half in their own end of the pitch. The Gaiters were able to maintain possession, but trouble with penalties would prove to be their undoing.
UP NEXT: Women’s Rugby has concluded its 2007-2008 season.

LACROSSE (4-2, T-2nd CUFLA East)
Lacrosse sweeps Carleton & Queen’s, rematches on tap this week

The Gaiters’ lacrosse team was in action twice last week, notching road wins over CUFLA East foes Queen’s and Carleton. On Saturday in Kingston, the Gaiters edged the Queen’s Golden Gaels 15-12 in overtime. On Sunday, Bishop’s completed the Ontario sweep with a 17-9 romp over the Carleton Ravens.

SATURDAY – Bishop’s 15 @ Queen’s 12 (OT)
On Saturday, the Gaiters came back from a 10-6 fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game at 11, and outscored the Golden Gaels 4-1 in the overtime session to escape Kingston with two points. In the extra session Josh Crone and Andy Barber notched two goals each for the Gaiters, who let a 4-1 first quarter lead slip away. John Cattie played his first game of the season, and came up big with a number of saves in the overtime periods. Andy Barber (6G, 2A) and Mike Dubé (5G, 3A) led the Gaiters overall with eight points each, while Josh Crone had four points (2G, 2A), including three in overtime.

SUNDAY – Bishop’s 17 @ Carleton 8
On Sunday, the Gaiters cruised to an eight-goal victory over the Carleton Ravens. Bishop’s raced out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and this time they were able to continue that momentum into the second, as they added another seven goals to lead 13-2 at the half. From there on, the Gaiters only added four goals in the final 40 minutes. Andy Barber was Bishop’s leading scorer with seven points (3G, 4A), while Mike Dubé had a four-goal game and Josh Crone had his second consecutive four-point game.

UP NEXT: Lacrosse has a pair of rematches on the docket this weekend. On Saturday, the Gaiters host the Queen’s Golden Gaels (0-4) at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the double-header concludes with a visit from the Carleton Ravens (2-2) at 3:30 p.m. (Note time change).
