GAITERS ESCAPE McGILL IN FOOTBALL, RUGBY & SOCCER SWEPT

October 9, 2007

LENNOXVILLE: The highlight of the Bishop’s Gaiters Thanksgiving weekend was football’s fourth consecutive win. On Saturday the Gaiters got a scare from McGill, but came out on top by a 30-25 score in front of 1,279 fans at Coulter Field. Earlier in the week, rugby suffered a pair of heavy shutout losses, while soccer went 0-2 for the week, but did end their goal-scoring drought. Finally, men’s basketball season opened up with a 70-58 exhibition loss to American International College, an NCAA school.

Travel is the name of the game this week for the Gaiters, as there is no home action at all. Football travels to Acadia for the last of their two AUS interlock games this season. Men’s Basketball heads to Montréal for the McGill Invitational, while Women’s Basketball is off to Toronto for the Ryerson Rams Classic. Women’s Soccer has a pair of away games this weekend, Friday at UQAM and Sunday at UQTR, while both rugby teams have away games on Sunday afternoon. The men travel to ETS, while the women stay in town to visit Sherbrooke. Finally, lacrosse continues its CUFLA schedule with games at Carleton and Queen’s.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

This week’s Pilsen Pub Athlete of the Week is James Yurichuk (Brampton, Ont.).  The third-year linebacker led the Gaiters’ defence with 13.5 tackles (11 solo), four sacks and a forced fumble in Saturday’s 30-25 win over the Redmen.

HONOUR ROLL:

UP NEXT: The Gaiters will travel to Wolfville, Nova Scotia to take on the Acadia Axemen (3-2). Acadia is coming off a 32-29 OT win over the Mount Allison Mounties. Bishop’s has not played Acadia since 2005, a 26-19 loss at Coulter Field. Kick-off at the newly-renovated Raymond Field is set for 2 p.m. Atlantic (1 p.m. Eastern).

MEN’S BASKETBALL (0-1)

Gaiters downed by AIC 70-58
Bishop's takes early lead, but worn down by more physical Americans

Game Stats

Men's Basketball opened their season tonight with a 70-58 loss at the Mitchell Gym to American International College, an NCAA Division II school from Springfield, Mass.

The Gaiters led 18-12 after the first quarter, as the Yellowjackets had trouble adjusting to the shorter shot clock and ran into some early foul trouble. However, AIC clawed back to tie the game at 22 early in the second quarter, and never trailed from that point on. AIC led 30-25 at the half and extended their lead to 56-38 after three quarters. The Yellowjackets led by as many as 20 points in the second half, but a 8-1 run by Bishop's late in the game cut the final margin of victory.

Bishop's was led by guard Junior Nicholas (Montreal, Que.) who scored 16 points, and a double-double from forward Doug McCooeye (Pointe Claire, Que.) (14 points, 10 rebounds), while forward Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) netted 13 points.

AIC's Ryan Leak led all scorers with 18 points, while Senat Colson scored 14, and Aikeem Vanderhorst added 13.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters travel to Montréal for the McGill Invitational, and open up the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. against the Windsor Lancers. On Saturday, at 3 p.m., they will face the York Lions, a perennial OUA East contender. Finally, on Sunday at 4 p.m., the Gaiters will take on the host Redmen.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (0-0)

Season opens at Ryerson this Friday night

Women’s Basketball opens their season this weekend with a trip to Toronto for the Ryerson Rams Classic. The Gaiters, last year’s QSSF finalists, will attempt to rebuild their squad after the loss of two QSSF All-Stars (Anouk Belanger, Emilie Crofton) to graduation and one to injury (Laure Pitfield). The process starts on Friday night, as the Gaiters take on the Guelph Gryphons at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the Gaiters will face either the Dalhousie Tigers or the host Ryerson Rams, followed by a game to be determined on Sunday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-6-1, T-7th QSSF)

Soccer ends goalless drought, but drop two more games

Women’s Soccer was in action twice last week, a 5-1 loss at the Sherbrooke Vert & Or, and a 1-0 home loss to UQAM on Thanksgiving Monday.

FRIDAY – Bishop’s 1 @ Sherbrooke 5
The back half of the home-and-home series went no better for the Gaiters than the first half. Emilie Duquette put Sherbrooke on the board in the first minute, and Josee Belanger’s goal in the 43rd minute put the Vert & Or up 2-0 at the break. Genevieve Thibault added two late goals, while Edith Norman added an injury-time marker to round out the Sherbrooke scoring. Emily St-Cyr (Richmond, Que.) scored in the 88th minute for Bishop’s, ending their goal-scoring drought at 572 minutes. The MVP of the game for Bishop’s was third-year forward Avalon Henry (Ottawa, Ont.), while Dominique Falardeau took the honours for Sherbrooke.

MONDAY – UQAM 0 @ Bishop’s 1
The Bishop’s Gaiters women’s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss on Monday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the visiting UQAM Citadins on a goal by forward Marianne Desgagnes with 46 seconds remaining. Despite controlling the tempo for most of the match and out-shooting the Citadins 11-7, the Gaiters were held scoreless for the sixth time this season. An apparent goal by Bishop’s forward Lisa Wagner midway through the second half was called back due to goaltender interference. Although the Gaiters did enjoy several more decent scoring chances throughout the game, an MVP performance by Citadins goalkeeper Evelyn Fleury kept Bishop’s off of the scoresheet. Chelsea-Lyn Aboud’s (Oakville, Ont.) six-save performance earned her MVP honours for the Gaiters.

UP NEXT: Women’s Soccer is in action twice this week. First up is their rematch on Friday at 7 p.m. in Montréal against the UQAM Citadins. On Sunday, the Gaiters will head up to Trois-Rivières to take on the UQTR Patriotes (1-6-1) in a 1 p.m. kickoff.

RUGBY (Men 2-3-0, T-3rd QSSF; Women 0-5-0, 6th QSSF)

Men and women both suffer heavy home losses

MEN – WEDNESDAY – McGill 55 @ Bishop’s 0
The undefeated McGill Redmen brought their strongest team in years down to Optimist Park on Wednesday, and put on a show for the young Men’s Rugby team. The Redmen were opportunistic, scoring 28 of their 55 points from Gaiters’ errors, and their speed allowed them to maintain possession of the ball throughout the match.
UP NEXT: Men’s Rugby’s next action is in Montréal against the ETS Piranhas (0-5-0)on Sunday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN – THURSDAY Laval 77 @ Bishop’s 0
Women’s Rugby saw their record fall to 0-5 with a 77-0 defeat at the hands of the undefeated Laval Rouge et Or. Pascale Gagnon de Meyer scored three tries for the visitors, and Marie-Pier Turcotte added six conversions as Laval’s undefeated season rolled on.

UP NEXT: The women are next in action on Sunday at 1p.m., as they travel across town to face the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (1-4-0).

LACROSSE (2-2, T-2nd CUFLA East)

Lacrosse upset by McGill, faces Carleton & Queen’s this week

The Gaiters’ lacrosse team had only one game last week, losing 11-10 to McGill last Thursday night. The loss marked the first time Bishop’s has lost to McGill in lacrosse play. A second-quarter sag proved fatal for the Gaiters, as a 2-2 first-quarter tie turned into a 7-3 McGill lead at the half. The Gaiters mounted a comeback in the second half, but were unable to make up the full deficit. Andy Barber’s 5 points (3G, 2A) led the Gaiters, while Jimmy Southall added four points (2G, 2A).

UP NEXT: Lacrosse is on the road for two games this weekend. On Saturday, they go to Kingston to take on the Queen’s Golden Gaels (0-3). On Sunday, the trip moves to Ottawa to face the Carleton Ravens (3-1).
