HEADLINES MAYOR'S CUP WIN, SOCCER DRAW HIGHLIGHT GAITERS WEEK September 18, 2007 LENNOXVILLE: This week was highlighted by football’s win over crosstown rivals Sherbrooke 33-26 before an enthusiastic home crowd at Coulter Field. The win gave Bishop’s the Mayor’s Cup for the first time, and evened their all-time series against the Vert-et-Or at 5 wins apiece. Elsewhere, Women’s Soccer suffered a 6-0 home loss to #10 Montreal on Friday afternoon. But the weekend ended on a much happier note, with a historic 0-0 draw at #5 McGill on Sunday afternoon. Rugby had a split weekend, with the men opening their home season with a 27-12 win over ETS on Friday night, while the women lost 51-0 at McGill on Sunday. Golf suffered a difficult weekend, finishing eighth at the André Pelletier Open at the Milby Golf Club. Finally, Lacrosse dropped a non-league game to the Brock Badgers 13-11 on Sunday. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: This week’s Pilsen Pub male Athlete of the Week is Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) The third-year running back set a modern-era QUFL record with 296 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s win over the Sherbrooke Vert-et-Or. His two touchdowns bring him up to 16 for his career, and leave him only six shy of the school record of 22. This week’s Pilsen Pub female Athlete of the Week is third-year midfielder Avalon Henry (Ottawa, Ont.). She was outstanding in the soccer team’s 0-0 draw at McGill on Sunday. She anchored the Gaiters’ defence, helped Bishop’s withstand the McGill attack, earning the Gaiters the shutout.

QUFL) LENNOXVILLE – One week after suffering a heartbreaking 20-18 loss to the 6th ranked Concordia Stingers, the Bishop’s Gaiters earned their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating cross-town rivals Sherbrooke 33-26 . Playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd of 2700, the Gaiters jumped out to a 19-2 halftime lead and withstood a late Vert et Or rally to win the 2nd annual Mayor’s Cup. Leading the way for the Gaiters was third-year running back Jamall Lee. The All-Canadian candidate was simply unstoppable against Sherbrooke, rushing for two touchdowns and a QUFL single-game record 296 yards. [Full recap … ] UP NEXT: The Gaiters will head up the A-10 to Montréal on Saturday, September 22 to take on the #5-ranked Carabins. On Friday afternoon, the Gaiters suffered a 6-0 loss at home to the #10 Montréal Carabins. However, on Sunday, Bishop’s travelled to McGill and came away with a 0-0 draw, representing only the second time that the Gaiters have taken points from the Martlets.

RUGBY (Men 1-1-0, T-2nd QSSF; Women 0-2-0, T-5th
QSSF) Rugby had mixed results this weekend, with the men coming away with a 27-12 victory over ETS on Friday at Optimist Park. Women’s Rugby travelled to McGill on Sunday, and fell 51-0 to last year’s QSSF finalists. MEN – In Friday’s home opener at Optimist Park, the young Gaiters found ETS a more difficult opponent to put away than in years past. The Gaiters found their form late, however, and scored three tries in the final ten minutes to down the pesky Piranhas by a score of 27-12. UP NEXT: The men host Concordia this Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Optimist Park. Last year the Stingers swept Bishop’s in three close games, including last year’s QSSF semi-final. WOMEN – On Sunday, women’s rugby travelled to McGill, where they took on the always-strong McGill Martlets. The Gaiters’ slow start to the match cost them, as McGill stormed out to a 39-0 halftime lead, on their way to a 51-0 victory over the Purple and White. Briana Yerbury led the Martlets with 16 points (two tries, three conversions), while Naomi Grenier added three tries. Bishop’s player of the game was Katrina McClary, who led the Gaiters’ backline in tackling and kicking for field position. UP NEXT: The women travel to Concordia on Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Montréal.
GOLF Golf opened their season last weekend at the André Pelletier Open, held at the Milby Golf Club in Lennoxville. The home cooking didn’t help the Gaiters, however, as they finished in eighth place in the team standings, with an aggregate total of 701. Brent Loach led the Gaiters with an individual score of 172 (73-92), as the Gaiters endured a difficult second round on Sunday. UP NEXT: Golf heads to the Deux-Montagnes Golf Club this weekend for the ETS Invitational, this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 22-23)
LACROSSE Sunday saw a rematch of last year’s CUFLA final, with the same result. Men’s Lacrosse fell to the Brock Badgers by a score of 13-10 in an exhibition game played in Peterborough, Ont. The Gaiters trailed 6-3 at halftime, and an undisciplined third quarter let the Badgers score five unanswered goals to lead 11-3. The Gaiters regained their composure and played with more intensity as they mounted a fourth quarter comeback attempt, outscoring Brock 7-2 in the final 20 minutes; however it was not enough to overcome the eight-goal deficit. UP NEXT: Lacrosse opens their home season on Thursday, they will face the McGill Redmen at 8:30 at Optimist Park. On Saturday, they travel to Toronto for a game against the U of T Varsity Blues. |
