October 12, 2007 LENNOXVILLE, Que. - Both Bishop's basketball teams were in action today, as they traveled to preseason tournaments. The men lost the first game of the McGill Redbird Classic 76-71 to the Windsor Lancers, while the women defeated the Guelph Gryphons 76-59 at the Ryerson Rams Classic. In other action, women's soccer fought the UQAM Citadins to a 1-1 draw.
The Gaiters got out to a quick start as they used an early 8-1 run to build a 22-15 lead after the first quarter. Bishop's expanded that lead to as many as 13 in the second quarter before taking a ten-point lead into the break. In the third, the Gaiters' shooting went cold, and the Lancers came all the way back, as they put up an 18-6 run to take the lead 51-49. The Lancers never trailed from that point on, as they led 56-51 after three quarters, and held on for the 76-71 victory. Nicholas led all scorers with his 32 point performance, including five three-pointers and also added three steals. Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) added 11 points for the Gaiters, who shot a total of 43% from the field. Windsor had four players in double digits, led by Ryan Steer and Greg Surmacz who had 14 points each. Bishop's (0-2) will play the York Lions (0-3) tomorrow at 3 p.m.

After building a 37-25 halftime lead, the young Gaiters were able to go deep into the rotation, as all 11 players saw at least eight minutes of action, and no player played more than 24 minutes. Heather Angus led Guelph with 19 points. The Gaiters (1-0) advance to the semi-finals of the Rams Classic, where will will face the Dalhousie Tigers (1-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Women's Soccer put an end to their five-game losing streak tonight as they played to a 1-1 draw with the UQAM Citadins in Montréal. Myriam Da Silva Rondeau put the Citadins up 1-0 in the second minute of the game, but the Gaiters' Casey Walsh responded in the 11th minute. From that point on, goalkeeper Chelsea-Lyn Aboud and the Gaiters' defence barred the gates, as the Gaiters picked up their first point since a 0-0 draw with McGill on Sept. 16th. |
