HOMECOMING WEEKEND BEGINS WITH A VERT-ET-OR SWEEP

September 28, 2007

LENNOXVILLE, Que. - Homecoming weekend kicked off tonight, with the Bishop's Gaiters facing the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in three different sports tonight. The Men's Rugby Gaiters fell 7-0 at Optimist Park in Lennoxville. Earlier in the evening, Women's Rugby suffered a 5-0 defeat to the Vert et Or. Earlier in the day, Women's Soccer dropped a 4-0 decision to Concordia.

MEN’S RUGBY: For the second time this season, Men's Rugby was shutout by the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, this time by a score of 7-0. Simon Maheu scored the only try of the day on a 50-metre run, and Jean-Michel David's conversion proved to be the only scoring on the evening. Bishop's held most of the possession during the game, but were unable to sustain possession through multiple phases. Near the end of both halves, Bishop's was able to put pressure on the Sherbrooke goal, but were unable to convert that into points, sending the crowd of nearly 300 home disappointed. With the loss, Bishop's falls to 2-2 on the year. Their next action is at home to the McGill Redmen this Wednesday (Oct. 3). Kickoff at Optimist Park is scheduled for 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S RUGBY: Women's Rugby fell 5-0 to the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, as Janika Chartrand provided the evening's only points. Chartrand was able to take advantage of an overlap after a 22-meter drop out. In both halves, Sherbrooke held the early advantage, forcing Bishop's on the back foot. However, the Gaiters were able to recover and put pressure on the Sherbrooke goal, but were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. The women are next in action on Thursday (Oct. 4), when they host the Laval Rouge et Or. Kickoff at Optimist Park is set for 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Bishop’s Gaiters women’s soccer team failed to score a goal for the fifth straight game on Friday evening, falling 4-0 to arch-rivals Sherbrooke in their annual homecoming game. An MVP effort by goalkeeper Chelsea Aboud wasn’t enough as the Vert et Or took an early 3-0 lead and managed to control the tempo for most of the match. Leading the way for the Vert et Or was 2006-2007 CIS rookie of the year Josee Belanger. The explosive second year forward scored three goals for the Vert et Or while defenseman Dominique Falardeau finished with four goals. Bishop’s (1-4-1) will travel to Sherbrooke next Wednesday for a rematch with the Vert et Or (4-2).
