HEADLINES Men's Rugby wins, Women's Soccer & Rugby lose on Friday night September 21, 2007 LENNOXVILLE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters faced the Concordia Stingers in three different sports tonight. The Men's Rugby Gaiters picked up a thrilling 17-15 win at Optimist Park in Lennoxville. Meanwhile, in Montréal, the Women's Rugby Gaiters suffered a 44-0 loss to the Stingers. Earlier in the day, Women's Soccer dropped a 3-0 decision to Concordia. MEN’S RUGBY: Sam Campbell's conversion with six minutes to go capped a Bishop's comeback and gave the Gaiters a 17-15 win over Concordia at Optimist Park. He converted Matt Pereira's try from an extremely difficult angle to give Bishop's their first lead of the day. The Gaiters picked up their first win over Concordia since Oct. 2, 2005, breaking a four-game Stingers winning streak in the series. The Gaiters held most of the possession in the first half of the match, but were unable to take advantage of their opportunities, and Concordia succeeded in scoring the first half's only try, and took a 5-0 lead into the interval. Early in the second half, Concordia added to their lead, and pulled out to a 15-5 advantage with only 20 minutes to play. A Bishop's try put brought the lead to 15-10, before Matt Pereira's try with seven minutes left, and Sam Campbell's subsequent conversion, put the Gaiters ahead. The final six minutes were tense for the Gaiters, looking for their second win in a row. In the dying seconds, Concordia's Sasha Palatnikov missed a drop goal attempt from about 30 yards out that would have given the Stingers the win. Chris Gaza Pugh and Chris Sowers were the other try scorers for the Gaiters. Glenn Imperial and Tyler Brimaombe scored tries for Concordia, while Palatnikov added a conversion and a penalty goal. With the win, Bishop's improves to 2-1 on the year. Their next action is the Homecoming Game, Friday, September 28 at 8 p.m. against the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. WOMEN’S RUGBY: Women's Rugby dropped a 44-0 decision to the Concordia Stingers in Montreal. Seven different players scored for the Stingers, while Jennifer Rosebaum and Sydney Theriault scored two tries each for Concordia. The loss is Bishop's third in a row. Their next action is Friday evening at 6 p.m., as they host the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Bishop's Gaiters women’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the visiting Concordia Stingers on Friday afternoon, dropping their record on the season to 1-3-1. Stingers forward Jessica Schroeder scored two goals while forward Emily Hubbard had a goal and an assist. The Gaiters, who were playing their fourth game in seven days, were held scoreless for the 3rd consecutive game. An even opening fifteen minutes did not pay off for Bishop's, as they were unable to penetrate the Stingers' defence. Concordia took advantage of their opportunities, however, as they scored two goals within five minutes midway through the first half. The Stingers' third goal and final was controversial, as an offside flag was waved off by the referee, and Schroeder was able to bank a shot off the goalpost and into the net. Bishop’s next game is their annual homecoming contest on Friday, September 28th against cross-town rivals Sherbrooke. Kickoff at the Wilson Soccer Pitch is set for 4 p.m. |
