GAITER SEASON OPENS ON THREE FRONTS THIS WEEK

September 7, 2007

LENNOXVILLE, Que. - The Bishop’s Gaiters open their 2007-2008 varsity schedule this weekend with four sports taking to the field. Men’s Football travels to Concordia tonight to face the 6th-ranked Concordia Stingers. Kickoff for the game is at 7 p.m., and it will be broadcast live on RDS. Women’s Soccer is at home today to the UQTR Patriotes, with that match kicking off at 4 p.m.   Women’s Rugby opens their home slate tomorrow (Saturday) against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.  Finally, Men’s Rugby starts their schedule on Sunday with a game at crosstown rivals Sherbrooke.

FOOTBALL: The Football Gaiters open up tonight with a rare Friday night game at the #6-ranked Concordia Stingers. The game will be shown on RDS, the first of three RDS games for the Gaiters this year. Bishop’s will be hoping to repeat their performance from last year, when they upset McGill 27-16 on Opening Day. Coach Leroy Blugh enters his third season with the team, and will be looking for a strong performance from his veteran defensive corps, and an improved attack led by second-year quarterback Jesse Andrews and third-year running back Jamall Lee.

WOMEN’S SOCCER : Women’s Soccer opens up this afternoon with a game at 4 p.m. against the UQTR Patriotes. Under the leadership of new Head Coach Darren Matthews, the Gaiters will be hoping to improve on last year’s 1-13-2 record. The Patriotes were winless last season, and the Gaiters will be hoping to get the year off to a good start with by taking all three points.

WOMEN’S RUGBY: Women’s Rugby takes to the field tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Last year’s team went 1-4, finishing fifth in the six-team QSSF league. The Gaiters are still a young team, with only three seniors on the roster, and so Saturday’s match against the Gee-Gees, who were 2-3 last year, will provide a good early test for the squad. Last year, the

MEN’S RUGBY: Men’s Rugby opens up across town at the Université de Sherbrooke on Sunday at 1 p.m. Bill Robson’s squad went 3-5 last season, and will be looking to avenge last year’s season-opening 14-13 away loss to the Vert et Or.
