Gaiters win Mayor’s Cup

Jamall Lee sets QUFL record as Bishop’s defeats Sherbrooke 33-26

LENNOXVILLE – One week after suffering a heartbreaking 20-18 loss to the 6th ranked Concordia Stingers, the Bishop’s Gaiters earned their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating cross-town rivals Sherbrooke 33-26 . Playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd of 2700, the Gaiters jumped out to a 19-2 halftime lead and withstood a late Vert et Or rally to win the 2nd annual Mayor’s Cup.

Leading the way for the Gaiters was third-year running back Jamall Lee. The All-Canadian candidate was simply unstoppable against Sherbrooke, rushing for two touchdowns and a QUFL single-game record 296 yards.

Lee opened the scoring early in the first quarter with a 75 yard touchdown run to give the Gaiters a 7-0 lead. After conceding a safety, Bishop’s increased its lead to 14-2 following a one-yard touchdown run by QB Jesse Andrews. A safety and a field goal late in the second quarter would give Bishop’s a commanding 17 point lead at the half.

A beautiful 70 yard touchdown by Lee early in the third quarter increased the Gaiters lead to 26-2 and put Lee over the 200 yard rushing mark for the third time in his career.

Trailing by 24 midway through the third quarter the Vert et Or began to mount a comeback. Quarterback J.P. Shoiry was able to find his rhythm and the Vert et Or benefited from numerous Gaiters penalties as Sherbrooke scored 17 unanswered points to make the score 26-19 . A 99 yard kick-off return by the electrifying Steven Turner would increase the Gaiters lead to 33-19 and give the home team a little more breathing room. Although Sherbrooke did score one more touchdown late in the fourth quarter, it was too little too late as the Gaiters earned their first victory against the Vert et Or since 2003.

Gaiters quarterback Jesse Andrews finished the game 12 for 15 for 81 yards with no interceptions and a rushing touchdown. Keith Godding led Bishop’s in receiving with 4 catches for 25 yards.

On defence, Gaiters defensive back Shane Francis finished with 6 tackles and an interception while lineman Dan McCullough finished with 4 tackles and a sack. Linebacker James Yurichuk and defensive back Cecil Francis also recorded interceptions.

Sherbrooke quarterback J.P. Shoiry was impressive in a losing cause, completing 30 of 54 passes for 464 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Receiver Sam Giguere also had an impressive afternoon, finishing with 12 catches for 214 yards.

Bishop’s (1-1) travels to Montreal next week to take on the 5th-ranked Montreal Carabins (1-1). Sherbrooke (0-2) will head to Quebec City to take on the #1 Laval Rouge et Or (1-0).
