Jamall Lee sets QUFL record as Bishop’s
defeats Sherbrooke 33-26
LENNOXVILLE – One week after
suffering a heartbreaking 20-18 loss to the 6th ranked
Concordia
Stingers, the Bishop’s Gaiters earned their first win of the season on
Saturday, defeating cross-town
rivals Sherbrooke 33-26 . Playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd
of 2700, the Gaiters jumped out to a 19-2 halftime lead and withstood a
late Vert et Or rally to
win the 2nd annual Mayor’s Cup.
Leading the way for the Gaiters was
third-year running back Jamall Lee. The All-Canadian candidate was
simply unstoppable against
Lee opened the scoring early in the
first quarter with a 75 yard touchdown run to give the Gaiters a 7-0
lead. After conceding a safety, Bishop’s increased its lead to 14-2
following a one-yard touchdown run by QB Jesse Andrews. A safety and a
field goal late in the second quarter would give Bishop’s a commanding
17 point lead at the half.
A beautiful 70 yard touchdown by Lee
early in the third quarter increased the Gaiters lead to 26-2 and put
Lee over the 200 yard rushing mark for the third time in his career.
Trailing by 24 midway through the
third quarter the Vert et Or began to mount a comeback. Quarterback J.P.
Shoiry was able to find his rhythm and the Vert et Or benefited from
numerous Gaiters penalties as Sherbrooke scored 17 unanswered points to
make the score 26-19 . A 99 yard kick-off return by the electrifying
Steven Turner would increase the Gaiters lead to 33-19 and give the home
team a little more breathing room. Although
Gaiters quarterback Jesse Andrews
finished the game 12 for 15 for 81 yards with no interceptions and a
rushing touchdown. Keith Godding led Bishop’s in receiving with 4
catches for 25 yards.
On defence, Gaiters defensive back
Shane Francis finished with 6 tackles and an interception while lineman
Dan McCullough finished with 4 tackles and a sack. Linebacker James
Yurichuk and defensive back Cecil Francis also recorded interceptions.
