Carabins edge #9 Gaiters 21-13
Jamall Lee rushes for 176 yards in losing effort

Lennoxville, Saturday, October 27, 2007 Five weeks after falling at home 24-5 to the Bishop’s Gaiters, the Universite de Montreal Carabins got a measure of revenge on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Gaiters 21-13 before 2,169 at Coulter Field.

Montreal opened the scoring early in the first quarter when receiver Frank Bruno returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown. After a pair of conceded safeties made the score 7-4, running back Jamall Lee gave Bishop’s an 11-7 lead on a spectacular 75 yard touchdown run.

Montreal, however, would come back in the second half. A 37-yard field goal early in the third quarter cut the Gaiters lead to 11-10. Following a conceded safety by the Carabins late in the quarter, Montreal took the lead for good early in the fourth when quarterback Marc-Olivier Brouillette connected with receiver Kevin Rivet on a 44-yard touchdown pass. A pair of conceded safeties increased the Carabins lead to 21-13. Although the Gaiters made a late comeback attempt, quarterback Jesse Andrews threw an interception in the endzone with less than 10 seconds left to seal the Carabins’ win.

Running back Jamall Lee was once again the player of the game for the Gaiters, carrying the ball 31 times for 186 yards and a touchdown. The Hec Crighton candidate finishes the season with a total of 1464 yards, the fifth-highest single-season total in CIS history, trailing only Hec Crighton winners Jesse Lumsden (McMaster) and Eric Lapointe (Mount Allison).

The Carabins offense was led by running back Dominic Chamberland-Pinto’s 95 yards, while Kevin Rivet caught six balls for 107 yards and a touchdown.

The Carabins win finalized the playoff picture in the highly competitive QUFL. With the win, Montreal (4-4) clinched the fourth and final playoff position and will face #1 Laval (8-0) next Saturday. The Gaiters’ (5-3) loss, meanwhile, dropped them into third place, meaning that they will have to travel to Montreal next Saturday to face the Concordia Stingers (5-3).
