Game Stats

Lennoxville, October 6th, 2007 –The Bishop’s Gaiters survived a scare on Saturday afternoon, edging out the McGill Redmen 30-25. The 8th ranked Gaiters jumped out to a 30-6 lead and withstood a late Redmen rally to win their fourth straight game of the season.

Bishop’s opened up the scoring early in the first quarter when quarterback Jesse Andrews (Pickering, Ont.) connected with receiver Shawn Gore (Don Mills, Ont.) on a 36 yard touchdown pass. A conceded safety on the next Redmen drive would give the Gaiters a 9-0 lead.

Bishop’s would increase their lead to 16-0 following a 62 yard touchdown run by Hec Crighton candidate Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) early in the second quarter. Kicker Josh Maveety (Kingston, Ont.) added a pair of field goals to increase the Gaiters lead to 22-0. McGill would cut the lead to 22-6 following a 30 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Connell to receiver Erik Galas late in the first half.

Following a mostly uneventful third quarter, Andrews connected with second year receiver Olivier Mongeau (Sorel, Que.) on a beautiful 71 yard catch and run to give the Gaiters a seemingly insurmountable 29-6 lead.

McGill, however, would make things interesting in the fourth quarter. Following a Gaiters single, McGill defensive back Schuyler O’Brien returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown to cut the Gaiters lead to 30-12. Less than two minutes later, Connell connected with receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte on a six-yard touchdown pass to make the score 30-18. Following a successful onside kick, Connell once again drove the Redmen down the field before hooking up with Sinotte in the end zone for a second time to make the score 30-25 with less than two minutes remaining.

After forcing a two and out, the Redmen got the ball on their own 39 with less than a minute to play and a chance to win the game. After driving the ball down to the Bishop’s 23 yard line, Connell’s last-second Hail Mary pass attempt was tipped by Bishop’s defensive back Nick Poloniato (Hamilton, Ont.) to preserve the Gaiters 30-25 win.

Lee was once again the Gaiters' top performer, carrying the ball 22 times for 181 yards and a touchdown while Andrews completed 13 of 19 passes for 211 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Matt Connell had a typically dominant afternoon for the Redmen, completing 30 of 41 passes for 371 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Sinotte also had an outstanding afternoon, setting a new QUFL record with 18 catches for 215 yards and two touchdowns.

Linebacker James Yurichuk (Brampton, Ont.) led the Gaiters defence with 13.5 tackles, 4 sacks and a forced fumble while McGill defensive back Schuyler O’Brien finished with 11 tackles, one interception and a touchdown.

Bishop’s (4-1) travels to Nova Scotia next week to take on the Acadia Axemen (3-2). McGill (0-5) travels to Concordia (3-1).
