Gaiters
dump Carabins 24-5, move to 2-1 on the year
Bishop's defence holds Montréal to 177 yards,
Jamall Lee posts second straight 100-yard
game.
MONTREAL - Jamall Lee's (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) 106 yards and one
touchdown led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 24-5 win over the #9 Montréal
Carabins in Montreal today. Lee's touchdown at 7:03 of the fourth
quarter broke open a tight defensive game, putting the Gaiters up 21-5.
The Gaiters defence was strong on the afternoon, holding Montréal to
only 177 yards of total offence, and forcing five turnovers.
Montréal came out strongly on their opening drive of the game, putting
together a 48-yard, nine play drive that stalled on the Bishop's 7.
However, Pierre-Paul Gelinas' field attempt sailed through the end zone,
forcing the Carabins to settle for a single point. That was as close as
Montreal would get to the Bishop's end zone, as the Purple and White
battened down the hatches from that point on.
The
Gaiters responded to the Carabins' early drive with a seven-play,
75-yard drive of their own, culminating with Jesse Andrews (Pickering,
Ont.) connecting to Olivier Mongeau (Sorel, Que.) for an 11-yard
touchdown pass to put Bishop's up 7-1. After that, the defences took
hold, and the scoring came in ones and twos until the fourth quarter.
Bishop's led 11-3 at halftime, and 11-5 after three quarters.
The
Gaiters put the game away in the fourth quarter, with contributions from
all three units. First, Josh Maveety (Kingston, Ont.) put the Gaiters up
14-5 with a 43-yard field goal. On the next possession, the Gaiters'
defence came up huge, stuffing Hantz Boursiquot for no gain on
3rd-and-1. After that, it was the offence’s turn, as Andrews marched the
Gaiters down the field 65 yards in four plays, with Lee's 16-yard
scamper into the end zone putting the Gaiters up by 16. A final Maveety
field goal rounded out the scoring.
Lee
ended the day with 23 carries for 109 yards with one touchdown, while
Andrews went 8-for-19 for 121 yards with one touchdown pass and an
interception. Kyle Jones had a strong day punting, sending off 14 punts
for an average of 36.5 yards, and recovering his own punt early in the
first quarter.
Montréal was led by Hantz Boursiquot, who ran for 76
yards on 14 carries, while Carabins quarterback Stéphane Larosilière
went 12-for-28 for 116 yards and threw two interceptions.
The Carabins took 13 penalties for 145 yards, while the Gaiters were
flagged ten times for 99 yards.
With
the win, Bishop's moves to 2-1 on the year, their best start since 1998.
The win is Bishop's first over ranked opposition since September 8,
2001, when the Gaiters downed then-#10 McGill 12-10. The Gaiters host
their Homecoming Game next week against Mount Allison (1-2) next
