Gaiters give #6 Concordia all they can handle
Turner's 108-yard KO return highlight of a tight game in Montreal

MONTREAL – The Bishop’s Gaiters nearly pulled off the upset of the young CIS season, but instead suffered a heartbreaking 20-18 loss to the #6 Concordia Stingers on Friday night in Montreal.

The Gaiters came out strongly, marching down the field for 64 yards in 10 plays, before settling for a 13-yard field goal by Josh Maveety (Kingston, Ont.) at the 4:47 mark. After that drive, the defences took over, with the only other scoring in the half came as Concordia’s Rene Paredes kicked a 17-yard field goal for Concordia with 27 seconds left.

The third quarter was more of the same until a 3-yard Blair Yachetti run put the Stingers up 10-3 with 2:59 to go. However, that lead would last a mere 34 seconds, as Bishop’s second-year kick returner Steven Turner (Brampton, Ont.) took the ensuing kickoff back for a 108-yard touchdown to tie the game at 10. A Paredes field goal early in the fourth put the Stingers out to a 13-10 lead.

Bishop’s response came early in the fourth, as Jesse Andrews (Pickering, Ont.) connected with Keith Godding (Ajax, Ont.) on a 52-yard pass that put the ball on the Concordia 1. Jamall Lee’s (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) one-yard plunge put the Purple and White up 20-17 with 9:25 to go.

Concordia regained the lead with five minutes remaining on a touchdown by Cory Watson. Bishop’s responded with a nine-play, 78-yard drive to the Concordia 3. With 1:38 remaining, Maveety’s 10-yard field goal attempt, which would have tied the game, went wide left and sailed through the end zone for a single.

Steven Turner ended the day with five total kick returns for 154 yards, while Jamall Lee led the Gaiters’ rushers with 19 carries for 98 yards, while Jesse Andrews went 17-for-27 for 189 yards with no interceptions.

Defensively, Dusty Burke (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) led the Gaiters with nine tackles, including two for losses, while Andrew Collymore (Pickering, Ont.) and Dan McCullough (Fredericton, N.B.) had 4.5 tackles each.

The Gaiters (0-1) host the Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or (0-1) this Saturday at Coulter Field in the second annual Mayor’s Cup game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., and the game will be shown live on RDS.
