GAITERS FOOTBALL SEASON ENDS WITH 34-18 LOSS AT CONCORDIA.

MONTREAL, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters football season came to an end today as the Gaiters were downed 34-18 by the Concordia Stingers in a QUFL semifinal today. 

 

The Gaiters took the first lead in the game, as Shane Francis scored on a 20-yard fumble return to put Bishop's up 7-0. However, that was to be only touchdown scored by the Purple & White on the afternoon. Concordia took a 10-7 lead on a Rene Paredes field goal and a Cedric Ferdinand one-yard run. Two Josh Maveety field goals and another from Paredes made the halftime score 13-13.

 

The Stingers broke open a 13-13 game with two touchdowns within 1:09 midway through the third quarter. Quarterback Liam Mahoney's 13-yard run put Concordia up 20-13 at the six-minute mark. Concordia's Cory Greenwood picked off a Jesse Andrews pass on the Gaiters' next play, and it took the Stingers only two plays to push the margin to 27-13.

 

The Gaiters responded three minutes later with Josh Maveety's third field goals of the afternoon. However, Andrew Nagy's interception with 6:17 left kept the Gaiters from finding the end zone. Concordia's Liam Mahoney put the game away with a touchdown at 12:55.

 

Jamall Lee was held off the stats sheet today, rushing only 11 times for 28 yards, while quarterback Jesse Andrews ran seven times for 90 yards. In the air, Andrews went 13-for-23 for 170 yards with four interceptions. Shane Francis led the Gaiters' defence with 7.5 tackles and a 20-yard interception return .Kyle Jones had eight tackles, while Simon Jones finisehd with seven, including a sack.

 

For Concordia, rookie quarterback Liam Mahoney had 101 yards passing on 17 completions, and ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Cedric Ferdinand went 23-for-168 with one touchdown.

 

With the loss, the Gaiters finish the season with an overall record of 5-4. Concordia advances to play Laval in the 2007 Dunsmore Cup next Saturday.
