LEE AND LEROY BLUGH COP QUFL MAJOR AWARDS
(Version française ci-dessous)
For immediate
release
November 5, 2007
Lennoxville, Que. – Bishop’s Gaiters running back Jamall
Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Terry Fox S.S.) and head coach Leroy Blugh
have been honoured as major award winners by the Quebec University
Football League. Commissioner Tom Allen made the announcement at a press
conference in Lennoxville today. Lee was awarded the Jeff Russel Trophy,
given to the league’s most outstanding player, while Blugh was named
QUFL Coach of the Year.
Lee, a third-year Sociology major, set a Quebec
single-season record with 1464 yards rushing, breaking Larry Smith’s
previous provincial record of 1050 yards. Lee’s total is also the
fifth-highest total in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) history. Lee
also set a new QUFL record with 181 carries, breaking the old mark of
176 (Joseph Mroué, Montréal, 2005). Lee ran for 12 touchdowns on the
season, a school record and the second-highest total in QUFL history,
and had seven runs of 50 yards or more, including three on Sept. 15
against Sherbrooke.
The 6’1” 215 lb Lee was named QUFL Offensive Player of
the Week on three occasions this season, and was named CIS player of the
Week twice. After only three seasons, Lee holds Bishop’s career records
for rushing yards (3094) and total touchdowns (25).
Lee is the first Gaiter to win this award since Trevor
Lovig in 1995. He now becomes the QUFL nominee for the Hec Crighton
Trophy, awarded to the CIS’ most outstanding player. The last OQIFC/QUFL
player to win the Trophy was Phil Côté of Ottawa in 1999, and a
Quebec-based school has only won once (Dave Fleiszer, McGill, 1969).
Blugh, 41, was named QUFL Coach of the Year by a vote of
coaches, athletic directors and media. Blugh led Bishop’s to a 5-3
record this year, the Gaiters’ first winning season since 1995, and
their first playoff appearance since 2002. Under his watch, Bishop’s
appeared in the CIS Top Ten for the first time since 1998, rising as
high as #6, and finished the season in the Top Ten for the first time
since 1995. The Gaiters also put together a five-game winning streak for
the first time since 1997-98.
Blugh, who won the Presidents’ Trophy (awarded to the
CIS’ most outstanding defensive player) as a player with Bishop’s in
1988 and was a three-time First-Team All-Canadian, will now hope to add
the Frank Tindall Trophy (awarded to the CIS Coach of the Year) to his
trophy case. Blugh was in his second year at Bishop’s when Bruce Coulter
became the first Gaiter coach to win the award in 1986. Ian Breck is the
last Gaiter to win, having earned the prize in 1992.
The CIS will announce its 2007 major award winners on
Wednesday, November 21st in Toronto, as part of the Vanier
Cup festivities.
