Women's Basketball: Gaiters' season ends with 69-51
loss to Laval
February 27, 2008
The Bishop's Gaiters' Women's Basketball season came to an end tonight
as they were downed 69-51 by the Laval Rouge et Or in a QUBL Semifinal
in Quebec City. The defeat marks the third consecutive time Bishop's has
fallen to Laval in the QUBL playoffs, and ends a streak of five
consecutive QUBL Championship appearances for the Gaiters. In
what has been a recurring theme for the Gaiters this season, the first
quarter told the tale of the game. This time, the Purple and White found
themselves in an early hole, as Laval used a 9-0 run to pull out to a
19-6 lead, and led 21-11 after ten minutes. In
the second quarter, the Gaiters kept pace with Laval, responding to an
8-0 Laval run midway through the stanza with a 9-2 run of their own, but
a pair of late Rouge et Or baskets gave the regular-season champions a
39-25 lead at halftime. In
the third quarter, Laval used a trio of early three-pointers to push
their lead to 20 points, putting the game beyond reach. The Gaiters held
even with Laval from that point on, but an inability to hit
three-pointers (2-of-14 in the second half) prevented them from cutting
into Laval's margin, as the regular-season champions cruised to the
victory. In
total, Laval outshot Bishop's by a margin of 42.6% to 30.9%, and were
6-of-13 from the three-point line, while the Gaiters were 3 of 17 from
beyond the arc.
Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) led the Gaiters with 15
points, while Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) and Sarah Gutkin-Sweezey
(Boucherville, Que.) added 10 points each in the losing cause. For
Laval, Myriam Lamarre scored a game-high 19 points, while Marie-Michelle
Genois picked up 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Karine
Bibeau added 14. The
Gaiters
finish the season with a record of 10-18 (10-16 vs. CIS, 6-10 QUBL),
their first losing campaign since going 11-18 overall in 2001-02.
Top-seeded
Laval (19-7, 12-4 QUBL) advances to face No. 2 seed UQAM, who downed
Concordia 77-67 in the other semifinal, in the QUBL Championship game on
Saturday afternoon in Quebec City. |
