Citadins
Friday,
February 15th, 2007
Lennoxville – The Bishop’s Gaiters basketball teams were swept by the
visiting UQAM Citadins on Friday evening. Women’s basketball fell 73-59
while the men were officially eliminated from playoff contention with an
80-68 loss.
Women:
Bishop’s falls to UQAM 73-59
LENNOXVILLE – One week after falling 57-42 to the Bishop’s Gaiters, the
UQAM Citadins earned a measure of revenge on Friday evening, snapping
the Gaiters three game win streak with a 73-59 win
After
falling behind 9-4 early in the first quarter, the Citadins quickly
regrouped and went on a 20-4 run to make the score 24-13 by the end of
the quarter. After trading baskets for most of the second quarter, the
Gaiters went on a late 6-0 run to make the score 33-28 at halftime.
After a
three-pointer by Bishop’s guard Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) midway
through the third quarter tied the game at 37-37, UQAM quickly went on a
9-0 run to make the score 46-37. The Citadins remained in control for
the rest of the game, outscoring the Gaiters 20-14 in the fourth quarter
to make the final score 73-59.
Amanda
Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) was the Gaiters’ top performer, finishing
with 14 points and nine rebounds. The veteran centre also blocked three
shots to bring her league-leading total to 29 on the season. Melanie
Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) finished with 13 points while
freshman Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) chipped in with eight points and
four assists.
The
Citadins were led by a highly balanced attack that saw four frontcourt
players finish with double-digit point totals. Forward Karine Boudrias
led all scorers with 18 points, while Claudia Gauthier-Théorêt and
Irline Noel finished with 16 points and centre Cora Duval finished with
15 points.
With
the win, UQAM (15-9, 9-4 QUBL) clinches second place in the QUBL.
Bishop’s (10-15, 6-8 QUBL) will be in action again tomorrow evening when
they travel to Quebec City to take on the Laval Rouge et Or (17-9,
11-3).
Men:
Gaiters’ comeback attempt falls short
LENNOXVILLE – In the final home game of Head Coach Eddie Pomykala’s
storied career, the Gaiters fell behind early and then saw their
second-half comeback attempt fall short as the Citadins downed Bishop’s
80-68. The loss officially eliminated the Gaiters from the QUBL playoff
picture, and was the Gaiters’ 12th straight defeat.
UQAM
jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Purple and White 19-10 in
the first quarter. The two teams traded baskets for most of the second
quarter until a late 14-4 run by the Citadins made the score 42-24 at
halftime.
After
falling behind by as many as 25 points early in the third quarter, the
Gaiters regrouped and went on an impressive 22-7 run to cut the Citadins
lead to 10 points by the end of the third quarter.
Bishop’s continued to cut into the Citadins lead early in the fourth
quarter. A pair of free throws by veteran guard Junior Nicolas
(Montreal, Que.) with seven minutes remaining cut the Citadins lead to
six points, but that would be as close as the Gaiters would get.
Nicolas
was the Gaiters’ top performer, finishing with 17 points and seven
assists. Damon Thomas Anderson (Verdun, Que.) also had a good game,
connecting on five of nine field goal attempts to finish with 12 points.
Kevin
Boucher led the Citadins with 19 points and six rebounds while Samuel
Johnson finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The
Gaiters (6-17, 2-12) will be in action tomorrow evening when they travel
to Quebec City to take on the Laval Rouge et Or (19-11, 12-2). Recaps written by Sean O’Neill |
