LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop’s Gaiters basketball teams picked up a split of their QUBL doubleheader at McGill this afternoon in Montreal. Women's Basketball cruised to a 69-47 victory over the Martlets in the first game, while Men's Basketball fell 78-70 in the nightcap.

Women: Piribauer's 17 leads Gaiters over Citadins

Game Stats

Amanda Piribauer's (Kingston, Ont.) 17 points led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 57-42 win over the UQAM Citadins at the Centre Sportif UQAM in Montreal. Piribauer went 8-from-10 from the field, also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and picked up two blocks to bring her league-leading total to 22 on the season.

As has been the case several times this season for the Gaiters, the first quarter told the story of the game. This time, the Gaiters never trailed and Piribauer's jumper with 1:26 remaining in the first capped a 9-0 run that broke the game open, and Bishop's ended the first up 23-11. The Citadins cut the lead to as few as five points late in the second quarter, and the Gaiters took a 33-26 advantage into the break.

The Amanda Show continued early in the third, as Piribauer scored six straight points to start the half, and put the Gaiters up by 13 at 39-26. From there, the Gaiters cruised to the victory, leading by as many as 19 at 49-30 and 57-38 and picking up the 15-point win.

Katy Germain (Val d'Or, Que.) and Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) also hit double figures for the Gaiters with 10 points each, while Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) led all players with five assists. Claudia Gauthier-Théoret led UQAM with nine points. The Gaiters hit 38.3% of their shots (23-60), while holding UQAM to only 26.1% (18-69) from the field.

The win, combined with Concordia's loss to Laval tonight, moves the Gaiters (9-14, 9-12, 5-7) in the QUBL, and keeps the Gaiters' hopes of hosting a playoff game alive. Bishop's is six points back of the second-place Citadins, with UQAM holding a game in hand.

Bishop's is back at home tomorrow night as they host the McGill Martlets (9-16, 2-11 QUBL) at 6 p.m.

Game Stats

A 27-point third quarter allowed the UQAM Citadins to score a come-from-behind win over the Gaiters in Men's Basketball action. The Gaiters led 47-41 at the half, but were outscored 27-12 in the third quarter and were unable to come all the way back in the fourth.

Junior Nicolas (Montreal, Que.) led the Gaiters to their first-half lead with 11 of his 16 points in the first 20 minutes, as Bishop's shot 58.1% from the field (18-31), and appeared to be on track to end their nine-game losing streak.

However, the Citadins caught fire in the third quarter, as Samuel Johnson hit for ten points in the frame, including seven of eight free throws. The Citadins went 7-for-9 from the field and hit 10 of 11 free throws to end the frame with a nine-point lead. The Gaiters went comparatively cold in the third quarter, as they shot 6-17 from the field.

Samuel Johnson and Jules Diagne led UQAM with 19 points each, with Renald Maignan adding 10.

The loss leaves the Gaiters (6-15, 6-14, 2-11) in fifth place in the QUBL, six points behind the 5-6 Citadins in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot, with the Citadins holding a game in hand.

The Gaiters return home tomorrow night to take on the McGill Redmen (13-14, 12-12, 6-7). Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
