Basketball: Gaiters pick up split at McGill
Women dump Martlets by 22, men stumble late in loss

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop’s Gaiters basketball teams picked up a split of their QUBL doubleheader at McGill this afternoon in Montreal. Women's Basketball cruised to a 69-47 victory over the Martlets in the first game, while Men's Basketball fell 78-70 in the nightcap.

Women's Basketball used a balanced performance, keyed by 36 bench points to dump the McGill Martlets 69-47 this afternoon in QUBL action. Courtney Cook (Maple Ridge, B.C.) came off the bench to lead the Gaiters with 11 points, while fellow reserve Christelle Côté (Magog, Que.) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Gaiters never trailed in the game, as they stormed out to a 13-2 lead in the first four minutes, led by five points from Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.). The Gaiters continued to cruise, holding the Martlets to seven second-quarter points as they led 31-17 at halftime. The second half saw the Gaiters stretch their lead to as many as 28 points at 65-37 as they eased to the 69-47 victory.

The Gaiters shot 38.8% from the field, and held McGill to 28.3% shooting. They also outrebounded the Martlets 43-33 and caused 23 McGill turnovers. Cook's 11 points led the Gaiters, while Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) added ten points. Felicia Craig-Thompson (London, Ont.) grabbed seven rebounds, while Amanda Piribauer also picked up seven boards, and three blocks.

McGill was led by Emilie Ruel's 13 points, while Nathifa Weekes added 12 points for the Martlets.

The win puts the Gaiters (8-14, 8-12, 4-7) back into a tie for third place in the QUBL with Concordia (7-17, 7-17, 4-6) at eight points each. The Martlets sit in last place in the five-team QUBL with a 2-11 league mark.

The Gaiters return to Montreal on Friday to face the UQAM Citadins at 6 p.m. before returning home on Saturday night for a rematch against the Martlets.

A game-ending 11-3 run by the McGill Redmen was the difference as they downed Men's Basketball 78-70. The Redmen broke a 67-67 tie on Michael White's jumper with 2:45 left and scored seven unanswered points to end the game, as the Gaiters suffered their fourth loss of the season to the Redmen.

The Gaiters started strongly, pulling out to an early 13-3 lead in the first 3:30 of the game, and led by as many as 14 points before a pair of late McGill three-pointers cut the first-quarter lead to 19-13. In the second quarter, the Gaiters were again able to pull out to a 10-point lead at 25-15, but a 9-2 run for McGill tied the game at 27, and the Redmen went into halftime up 31-30.

The teams traded points in a high-scoring third quarter, with Bishop's outscoring McGill 26-20, to take a 56-51 lead into the final stanza. The Gaiters held on to their lead through most of the fourth quarter, but McGill took the lead at 63-61 with 5:43 left. The teams traded baskets until the three-minute mark, when Pawel Herra made two free throws for McGill to cause the 67-67 tie.

Kevin Selman (Pierrefonds, Que.), making only his third start of the season, led the Gaiters with 19 points and six rebounds. Junior Nicolas (Montreal, Que.) netted 15 points and added a game-high six assists, while Cam Mowat (New Westminster, B.C.) picked up 11 points. Moustafa El-Zanaty led McGill with 22 pints, while three other Redmen scored in double figures.

The loss drops the Gaiters' QUBL record to 2-9 (6-14 overall, 6-13 CIS), and leaves them in fifth place in the QUBL, four points shy of the fourth-place UQAM Citadins. The Gaiters will visit UQAM on Friday night at 8 p.m., before returning home on Saturday for their final regular-season matchup with the Redmen, also at 8 p.m.
