Basketball: Gaiters swept by McGill
Gaiters swept in low-scoring duels.

MONTREAL - For the second straight week, the Bishop's Gaiters basketball teams came back empty-handed from Montreal. Tonight the Gaiters were swept by McGill, losing a pair of low-scoring games. In the women's game, the Gaiters fell 48-35 to the Martlets, while the men dropped a 55-52 come-from-behind decision to the Redmen.

Women's Basketball scored only nine points in the first half, and were unable to overcome a 29-9 halftime deficit as they dropped a 48-35 decision to the McGill Martlets.

The Gaiters shot 11.1% (3-for-27) in the first half, compared to McGill's 37.9%, and were 0-for-11 in the second quarter, as the Martlets took a 29-9 lead into halftime. The Gaiters came back in the second half, and were able to get to within seven points with six minutes to play, but a 9-0 McGill run quashed the Gaiters' comeback hopes. For the game, the Gaiters shot a season-low 21.5% from the field.

The Gaiters' offensive struggles overshadowed a strong defensive performance. The Gaiters picked up a season-high 20 steals, led by Robyn Wilson's (Vancouver, B.C.) five, and forced 30 McGill turnovers, tying a season high. The Gaiters also held the Martlets to 29.1% shooting, marking the third time this year Bishop's has held their opponents under 30% from the field.

Amanda Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaiters with 15 points and added two blocks, while Wilson picked up seven points and eight rebounds. Catherine Parent led the Martlets with ten points and eight rebounds, while Emilie Ruel netted eight points and 12 rebounds.

The Gaiters (4-11, 4-9 CIS, 2-4 QUBL) will return home on Friday night to face the UQAM Citadins (10-7, 10-7 CIS, 4-2 ). The action gets underway at 6 p.m.

MEN’S Redmen come from behind to down Gaiters 55-52
McGill ends game on 13-0 run

Men's Basketball let a 52-42 fourth-quarter lead slip away as they fell 55-52 to the McGill Redmen on Saturday night. The Gaiters went scoreless in the last 7:05 of the game as McGill finished on a 13-0 run.

The Gaiters had come back from an 18-12 first-quarter deficit and went into halftime tied at 27. In the third quarter, Bishop's quickly built up a lead, as a pair of Andrew Wright three-pointers helped the Gaiters build a 37-30 lead early in the third. Hermon Tesfagehbriel put the Gaiters up 52-42, with seven minutes to play, but the Gaiters were unable to hit the basket from that point on. McGill went 8-of-14 from the free-throw line down the stretch to complete their comeback.

For the game, McGill outshot the Gaiters by a margin of 35.4% (17-48) to 31.1% (19-61) and outrebounded Bishop's 46-30. The Redmen went to the free throw line 24 times, hitting on 14 of their attempts, while Bishop's went 9-for-11.

Andrew Wright led all scorers with 13 points, while Junior Nicolas added 12 for the Gaiters. Three Redmen scored in double figures, with Sean Anthony picking up a double-double (ten points, 12 rebounds)

The Gaiters (6-9, 6-8 CIS, 2-4 QUBL) will host the UQAM Citadins (6-8, 2-8 CIS, 1-5 QUBL) on Friday night (Jan. 18). Tipoff at the Mitchell Gym is set for 8 p.m.
