Women’s Soccer Preview
Lady Gaiters hope that more experience will lead to more wins

Sept. 15, 2006 – 2005 was largely a rebuilding year for the Bishop’s Lady Gaiters, as their young but talented team struggled to a 2-12 league record. As they enter 2006, however, Bishop’s hopes that the experience gained a year ago will help them become more competitive.

Defender Stacy Holder and goalie Chelsea Aboud are among the key returning veterans on Head Coach Michael Richardson’s team and several talented rookies should make an impact as well. The addition of players like Laura Tacchi, Christine Vidal, Merran Smith, Chrystal Scott, Anna Wikstrom, and Emily St Cyr, along with the return from long tern injury of stand-out Casey Walsh, bolsters the squad and bodes well for the future.

While Montreal, Laval and Concordia remain the teams to beat in the QSSF, improving on last year’s win total and possibly even contending for a playoff spot remain realistic goals for the Lady Gaiters in 2006.

Despite losing stand out players like Hilary Bartram (graduated), team MVP Lisa Wagner (on exchange), and starting defender Melissa Cinquino (retired), the team looks to be stronger.

“Things seem to be starting off on the right foot,” said Coach Richardson.” Our goal is to stabilize the team after a couple of difficult seasons. We hope to build a solid foundation this season so we can move forward in the future. Hopes of quick fixes and sudden play-off challenges are not what we are looking for. Rather, we will work as a team to regain the stability from which to mount a challenge in the near future. With that in mind, the objective of this season is to be competitive in every game and to be more consistent''.

''I like the way we ended off last year, although we had a tough go of it, we persevered and things started to improve with some much better performances near the end of the season, culminating in a victory at home against UQTR. We want to build on that.”

“The real test will be to see how these players gel on the field. If the girls can remain focused for 90 minutes every game, and can avoid getting too down if we hit a tough patch, then we should start to move back up the table, leaving the team in a much better position to move forward in the future.”

Bishop’s season gets underway Friday afternoon when they host the Concordia Stingers at 4 p.m.
