Women's Rugby: Lady Gaiters look to improve in 2006

Sept. 15, 2006 – After going 1-5 in 2005, the Bishop’s Lady Gaiters rugby team is hoping to improve in 2006. Despite losing three important veterans, a talented and experienced rookie class and the return of several key veterans gives the team a reason to be optimistic.

Last season marked the first time since 1999 that Bishop’s failed to qualify for the QSSF playoffs and the Lady Gaiters are hoping to bounce back this season and earn a post- season spot.

Veteran Cailin McCulloch, who was named to the QSSF All-Star team a year ago, is expected to lead the team along with fellow veterans Marnie Hurst, Amy Gallant and Marie Jacques-Bilodeau.

Among the rookies who have joined the Lady Gaiters roster are Katrina McClary and Meredith Evans who played, respectively, for the New Brunswick and Eastern Ontario U-19 teams.

“I think that we are starting to come together as a team,” says new Head Coach Eryn Hessian, who has served as an assistant coach with the team for the past two seasons, “We have a lot of speed and we have the potential to make great progress this season.”

One of the keys to the Lady Gaiters season will be the development of their backfield, where McCulloch is the only returning veteran with experience at the position.
