Bishop's Polar Bears lose in the Georgia Cup final at Vermont

Jan. 17, 2007 – The Bishop's University Polar Bears women's hockey lost in the Georgia Cup final held in Morrisville, Vermont this past Friday by a 4-1 score against the Green Mountain Girls, an All-Star team from Burlington, Vermont.

Despite the outstanding goaltending of Paige Marlow and an all-out effort from the entire team the Polar Bears came out on the short end the score. Sarah Bennett scored the lone goal for Bishop’s.

Sunday morning found the Polar Bears in a must win situation to make the final and the team came through with a 9-0 win over the Ice Storm. Anna Bertrand led the team scoring with a hat trick, Sarah Bennett had goals with singles to Lisa Kennedy, Emily Dick, Michelle McKay and Jessica Frappied. Maryse Richard recorded the shutout in nets.

Friday night, the Polar Bears defeat the host team Molty Crew by a score of 14-1. Leading the Bears was first-year player Sarah Bennett with four goals. Lisa Kennedy, Jessica Frappied and Michelle McKay chipped in two each with singles going to Anna Bertrand, Sarah Owens and Emily Dick. Maryse Richard was in nets for the win.

The second game on Friday night did not go as well and the Polar Bears dropped a 5-1 game to a All-Star team from Burlington, Vermont called the Green Mountain Girls. Sarah Bennett scored the lone Bishop’s goal. Paige Marlow was outstanding in nets with the loss stopping over 40 shots.

Next week, on Saturday, January 27th, the Polar Bears will travel again to Morrisville, Vermont for the North American Hockey Academy Winter Carnival Tournament. Bishop’s will start the tournament playing in first round against the Princeton Tiger Lillies and the NAHA Red.
