Alpine skiing: Gaiter Men earn first podium finish in three years

Feb. 12, 2007 – The Bishop's Gaiters ski team enjoyed a very successful weekend as they travelled to Massif de la Petite-Riviere Saint Francois in Charlevoix to participate in two slalom competitions.

On Saturday, Calgary's Graham Carr turned in the best performance of his two-year university career, earning the bronze medal after finishing with a time of 1:40.71, three seconds behind Christian Vining of McGill.

Carr's bronze marked the first podium finish on the men's side for a Gaiter since James Morrison earned a bronze medal at a race in Le Relais du Lac Beauport on February 1st, 2004.

Fourth year veteran Robert MacKay of Toronto also had a good outing for the Gaiters, finishing in 13th place, a career high.

Jennifer Bertram of Vancouver was the Gaiters top female performer, finishing in 8th place. Bertram was joined by teammates Alicia Wood, who finished in ninth place, and Jennifer Post (11th).

On Sunday, the Bishop's saw five skiers land in the top 17. Ian Snowsell of Banff led the way with a ninth place finish while Graham Carr finished in 11th place.

Bertram was once again the Gaiters top female performer, finishing in 6th place, while Jennifer Post finished in 11th place.

“I was happy to see our veteran men and women step up and provide us with top finishes. Graham had an impressive weekend and we hope to see more podium finishes out of graham in the upcoming races. Also, Pat Corney, Rob Mackay and Ian Snowsell all finished in the top 15,” said head coach Warren Schindler.

“Jen (Bertram) and Alicia also skied very well. Alicia's skiing was very strong, she excels at slalom and she proved that this weekend. Jen improved on her finishes from last race and I think she has the potential to be on the podium every race.”

The Quebec University ski circuit will be in Mount Sutton next weekend for two giant slalom competitions.

Ski universitaire : Un premier podium masculin en trois ans pour les skieurs de Bishop’s

12 février 2007 – Les skieurs de l’Université Bishop’s ont connu un week-end exceptionnel au niveau des résultats alors qu’avait lieu deux slaloms spéciaux présentés au Massif de la Petite-Rivière-Saint-François dans la région de Charlevoix.

Samedi, l’Albertin Graham Carr (Calgary, Alb.) a réussi sa meilleure performance en deux ans sur le circuit universitaire de ski alpin en mettant la main sur une médaille de bronze en vertu d’un chrono combiné de 1:40;71, à moins de trois secondes du vainqueur Christian Vining de McGill.

Il s’agit d’un premier podium pour la formation masculin de Bishop’s depuis la troisième place récolté par James Morrison le 1er février 2004 au Relais du Lac-Beauport.

Le vétéran de quatre saisons Robert MacKay (Toronto, Ont.) a aussi bien fait chez les Gaiters en prenant la 13e place, son meilleur résultat en carrière.

Du côté féminin, Jennifer Bertram (Vancouver, C-B.) a pris la 8e position suivi d’Alicia Wood (Thornbury, Ont.). Jennifer Post a aussi bien fait avec une 11e position.

Dimanche, les Gaiters ont vu cinq de leurs porte-couleurs terminer parmi les 17 premiers. Ian Snowsell (Banff, Alb.) a été le meilleur avec une 9e place suivi de Graham Carr qui a pris le 11e rang.

Chez les femmes, Jennifer Bertram a fini 6e tandis que Jennifer Post prenait la 11e place.

« J’étais bien heureux de voir nos vétérans se lever et bien faire en piste, avouait l’entraîneur Warren Schindler. Graham a connu un impressionnant week-end et nous espérons le voir remporter d’autres podiums d’ici la fin de la saison. Pat Corney, Rob Mackay et Ian Snowsell ont aussi bien fait avec des tops 15. »

« Jen et Alicia ont aussi bien skié. Alicia excelle en slalom spécial et elle l’a bien démontré. Jen a pour s’est pour sa part amélioré ses résultats par rapport aux deux premières courses et je crois qu’elle a le potentiel d’être sur le podium à toutes les courses. »

Le Circuit universitaire de ski alpin s’arrêtera au Mont Sutton le week-end qui vient avec la présentation de deux slaloms géants.
