35th season of the Quebec University ski circuit set to begin
Bishop's to rely on 12 returning veterans

Jan. 17, 2007 – The 35th edition of the Quebec University ski circuit will begin this weekend with two giant slalom competitions to be held at the Massif du Sud ski resort in Chaudiere-Appalaches.

The season, which will run from January 20th to March 17th, will feature over 140 student-athletes from seven Quebec Universities (Bishop's, Concordia, Laval, McGill, Montreal, Sherbrooke and UQAM) competing in a total of 10 races over a five weekends.

Bishop's is hoping that the return of 12 veterans from last year's team will help lead to the school's first title since the 1999 season.

Leading the Gaiter women will be Vancouver native Jennifer Bertram who finished in 8th place in the circuit in 2006 and 4th place in 2004. Bertram is joined by captain Alicia Woods of Thornbury, Ontario (20th in 2006, 13th in 2005), Katie Bruce of Darthmouth, Nova Scotia (15th in 2006, 10th in 2005) and Jennifer Post of France (12th in 2006).

On the men's side, Bishop's will feature seven returning veterans including Calgary's Graham Carr (8th in 2006) and Banff's Ian Snowsell (22nd in 2006). Joining Carr and Snowsell is Toronto native Rob Mackay who also play for the rugby team at Bishop's. In 2004, he finished in 18th place. Gaiters football star Bentley Cross will also be joining the team for his fourth and last season.

“I am very excited for the upcoming year. I'm looking for sophmore men Graham Carr and Ian Snowsell to improve on last season and provide the mens side with some top finishes,” said head coach Warren Schindler.

“We are very excited to have Jen Bertram back, as the female side will look to her as well as Jen Post and Katie Bruce to provide the team with points. Team captain Alicia Wood will also be counted on for some top slalom finishes this season.”

In each season since 2003, Bishop's has finished in 4th place in the combined standings behind Montreal, McGill and Laval. During that span the Gaiters women have finished in third place in the conference three times.

Individual rankings in the circuit are determined by taking each skiiers top three marks in both the slalom and giant slalom competitions. The top male and female skiiers will each receive the top skiier award as well as a $500 boursery courtesy of Mr. Bernard Trottier.

Team rankings are determined by taking the top five male and female results from each competition, with the combined results being used to determined the overall team rankings.
