Men's rugby team to face Concordia in conference semi-finals

Oct. 26, 2006 – Six Gaiter teams will be in action this weekend as the fall season comes to a close for several teams.

Men's Rugby: Gaiters seek revenge against Stingers in conference semi-finals

After falling to the McGill Redmen 11-3 a week ago, the Bishop's Gaiters (3-5) return to Montreal this weekend to face the Concordia Stingers in the Quebec conference semi-finals. The game is scheduled for 12:00 Sunday afternoon on the Stingers Loyola campus.

After finishing third in the conference in the regular season, head coach Bill Robson's team heads into Montreal looking for their first win in three tries against Concordia this year. The Stingers defeated Bishop's 12-3 on September 3rd and then again by a score of 15-13 two weeks ago.

For the Gaiters, Sunday's match will be a chance to earn a measure of revenge against a Stingers team that eliminated them from the post-season a year ago. Last season, in a violent match in which the referee was forced to intervene on more than one occasion, the Stingers upset the Gaiters 20-7 in the conference semi-finals.

Saturday's game could be the final university game for several Gaiter veterans, as 11 of the 26 players on the Gaiters roster are in their fourth or fifth years. Among those certain to be gone following the conclusion of the season are fifth year players Richard Frasier, Matthew Gagnon, Scott MacDonald and Tommy Wong.

Football: Gaiters playing for pride in final game of the season

The Gaiters (1-6) will travel to Montreal to face the McGill Redmen (3-4) this Saturday afternoon at 1:00.

Saturday afternoon's game will be the last of the season for Leroy Blugh's team after they were eliminated from the postseason a week ago following their 38-10 loss to the Mount Allison Mounties.

For the Redmen, Saturday afternoon's contest will give them a final chance to prepare for the Laval Rouge et Or, who they are scheduled to face next week in the QSSF semi-finals. McGill did not play last week as their opponents, StFX, forfeited their game due to a widespread virus on the school's campus.

Bishop's, on the other hand, will be looking to end their season just as it began: with a win over the Redmen. Running back Jamall Lee, who had 279 yards rushing in the Gaiters week one victory over McGill, leads the Quebec conference in rushing with 803 yards and has a chance to become the first running back in Gaiter history, and only the third running back in QSSF history, to finish with over 1000 yards rushing in a season. Montreal running back Joseph Mroue currently trails Lee by 42 yards.

In his last two contests against the Redmen, Lee has gained a total of 503 yards rushing. McGill's last victory over Bishop's came on September 18th, 2004.

Saturday afternoon will also mark the final CIS game for eight Bishop's players: wide-receivers Javier Rivera and Adam Brock, offensive lineman Matthieu Cock's-Morissette and Tyler Skelding, defensive backs Bentley Cross and Cole Gehring, linebacker Ryan Samson and defensive lineman Anthony Gauthier. Fourth year defensive lineman Matthew Chown, who suffered a season ending injury in week two against Sherbrooke, could be back with the Gaiters next season.

Women's Basketball: Lady Gaiters host Laurentian

The Bishop’s Lady Gaiters will host the Laurentian Voyagers in an exhibition match this Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Gymnasium.

Bishop's has posted a 4-2 record in pre-season play thus far, while Laurentian currently has a record of 1-3. Last year, Laurentian finished with a 12-10 record in the Ontario Conference.

After sitting out one game last week due to an ankle injury, Gaiter star Anouk Boulanger is expected to play for Bishop's on Friday evening.

Men's Basketball: Gaiters head to the Maritimes to participate in StFX Tournament

The Gaiters will be heading out east this weekend to participate in a tournament hosted by the StFX X-Men in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. It will be the Gaiters final exhibition tournament before the start of the regular season.

Friday night, the Gaiters will face the X-Men while Saturday the Gaiters will face either Cape Breton or UNB.

The tournament will signify the beginning of the post-Jeff Szita era for Eddie Pomykala's team, as the former QUBL MVP will not be in the Gaiters lineup for the first time in five seasons. Without Szita in the post, Pomykala expects his team to adopt a much more fast-paced approach.

Among the key returning players for the Gaiters are wingmen Cam McDonald (6'5. 205 pounds) and Doug McCooeye (6'6, 205), centre Cam Mowat (6'6, 215) and guards Kevin Watson (5'6, 160) and Jason Thorne (6'1, 175).

Also in the Gaiters lineup will be blue-chip recruit Andrew Wright, a 5'11, 165 pound guard and Paul Woodham, a 6'8, 230 pound centre.

Bishop's has a 2-1 record in preseason play thus far while StFX is 3-0. Last season, the X-Men captured the Atlantic Conference championship for a third straight season with an overall record of 28-9 before falling in the CIS semi-finals.

Women's Soccer: Lady Gaiters finish their season at home

The Lady Gaiters (1-8-3) season will come to a close this weekend as they prepare to host the top two teams in the Quebec conference.

Fridat at 3:00, the Lady Gaiters will host the Laval Rouge et Or (8-1-2), who are currently ranked fifth in the country. Laval has scored an amazing 43 goals in 11 games this season, meaning that Gaiters star goalie Chelsea-Lyn Aboud is bound to have her work cut out for her. Friday evening's game will be Laval's second in as many days.

The Lady Gaiters will play their final game of the season on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 when they host the undefeated McGill Martlets (8-0-3), who have allowed only one goal all season long.

Lacrosse: Last weekend at homebefore the playoffs

The Gaiters (7-0) will play their final two games of the regular season this weekend when they host Laurier (Saturday, 1:00 p.m) and Guelph (Sunday, 1:00 pm). Both games will be held in Lennoxville's Optimist Parc.

With a win over Guelph on Sunday the Gaiters could clinch first place in their conference and earn a first round bye in next weeks Baggattaway Cup finals, which are being held in Toronto.

La formation masculine de rugby à Concordia pour la demi-finale provinciale

26 octobre 2006 – Six équipes des Gaiters de l’Université Bishop’s seront en action ce week-end alors que la saison automnale tire à sa fin.

Affamés, les Gaiters affrontent Concordia en demi-finale provinciale

Après avoir essuyé un revers de 11 à 3 face au Redmen de McGill dimanche dernier à Montréal, les Gaiters (3-5) se rendront à nouveau dans la métropole pour y affronter cette fois les Stingers de Concordia en demi-finale provinciale ce dimanche à 12h sur le campus Loyola.

Troisième au classement général, les troupiers de l’entraîneur Bill Robson ont subi plutôt cette saison deux revers serrés contre les Stingers. Le 15 septembre dernier à Bishop’s, Concordia l’avait emporté 12 à 3 à tandis que le 15 octobre, les Gaiters se sont inclinés au compte de 15-13.

Pour les Gaiters, la rencontre de dimanche se veut un match revanche puisque les deux équipes s’étaient affrontées en pareil circonstance l’an dernier, Concordia ayant eu le dessus 20 à 7 dans un violent match où l’arbitre avait dû intervenir à plusieurs reprises.

Il s’agira aussi du dernier match universitaire de plusieurs vétérans de Bishop’s puisque onze des 26 joueurs en sont à leur quatrième ou cinquième année avec les Gaiters. Parmi ceux-ci, Richard Fraser, Matthew Gagnon, Scott MacDonald et Tommy Wong complètent une cinquième saison.

Un dernier effort pour l’honneur

Les Gaiters (1-6) visiteront les Redmen de McGill (3-4) au stade Molson ce samedi à 13h.

Pour les hommes de Leroy Blugh, il s’agira du dernier match de la saison 2006 puisque les Gaiters ont été éliminés des séries samedi dernier en subissant un revers face à Mount Allison.

D’un côté, les Redmen voudront se préparer adéquatement en vu de leur match éliminatoire face au Rouge et Or qui aura lieu la semaine suivante, eux qui ont disputé leur dernière rencontre le 14 octobre. Rappelons que samedi dernier, McGill n’a pu jouer son match en raison d’un virus gastrique qui a affligé le campus de StFX, endroit où les Redmen devaient jouer.

De l’autre côté, les jeunes Gaiters voudront finir la saison sur une note positive, tout comme il l’avait fait en début de campagne aux dépends de McGill. Le porteur Jamall Lee sera à nouveau sous les feux des projecteurs, lui qui domine la conférence québécoise avec 803 verges en sept parties. Il devance par 42 verges Joseph Mroué des Carabins de l’Université de Montréal.

À ses deux derniers matchs face à McGill, Lee a amassé plus de 500 verges au sol. La dernière victore de McGill sur Bishop’s remonte au 18 septembre 2004.

Samedi, huit porte-couleurs des Gaiters disputeront un dernier match universitaire en carrière. Il s’agit des receveurs de passe Javier Rivera et Adam Broek, des joueurs de ligne offensive Mathieu Cock's-Morissette et Tyler Skelding, des demi-défensifs Bentley Cross et Cole Gehring, du secondeur Ryan Sansom et du joueur de ligne défensive Anthony Gauthier. Quant à Matthew Chown, il pourrait être faire un retour avec les Gaiters l’an prochain, lui qui fut contré à l’abandon en raison d’une blessure au genou survenu lors du deuxième match de la saison face à Sherbrooke.

Basketball féminin
Bishop’s reçoit Laurentian

Les Lady Gaiters recevront la visite des Voyageurs de Laurentian dans un match hors-concours ce vendredi à 18h au gymnase Mitchell du centre sportif John H. Price.

Bishop’s possède une fiche de 4-2 en matchs hors-saison contre un dossier de 1-3 pour Laurentian. Située à Sudbury en Ontario, l’Université Laurentian a terminé la saison dernière avec un dossier de 12-10.

Blessée à la cheville le week-end dernier, la Sherbrookoise Anouk Boulanger devrait être à son poste pour les Lady Gaiters.

Au tour de l’équipe masculine de basketball à se rendre dans les Maritimes

Les Gaiters participeront au tournoi des X-Men de StFX ce week-end à Antigonish en Nouvelle-Écosse. Il s’agira des dernières rencontres préparatoires avant le début de la saison régulière.

Vendredi soir, Bishop’s sera opposé à StFX tandis que le lendemain, les Gaiters feront face à UNB ou Cape Breton.

Ce sera un gros test pour la troupe d’Eddie Pomykala qui débutera une nouvelle ère sans les services de l’ex-Gaiter Jeff Szita. Selon l’entraîneur, les Gaiters afficheront un style de jeu différent de par le passé qui met l’emphase sur la vitesse d’exécution.

Parmi les joueurs clefs de retour avec la formation sherbrookoise, il faudra surveiller les ailiers Cam McDonald (6’5’’, 205 l) et Doug McCooeye (6’6’’, 205 l), le centre Cam Mowat (6’6’’, 215 l) et les gardes Kevin Watson (5’6’’, 160 l) et Jason Thorne (6’1’’, 175 l).

De plus, les Gaiters pourront compter sur l’appui de deux recrues en Andrew Wright, un garde de 5’11, 165 l., et Paul Woodham, un centre de 6’8’’, 230 l.

Bishop’s possède actuellement une fiche de 2-1 en matchs hors-saison contre un dossier de 3-0 pour StFX. L’an dernier, les X-Men ont remporté les honneurs de la conférence Atlantique pour une troisième saison de suite et ont conclu la campagne 2005-2006 avec une fiche globale de 28-9 avant de s’incliner en demi-finale lors du championnat canadien.

Les Lady Gaiters concluent la saison à domicile

La saison des Lady Gaiters prendra fin ce week-end alors que les Lady Gaiters (1-8-3) recevront les deux meilleures équipes de la province.

Vendredi à 15h, Bishop’s sera opposé à l’Université Laval (8-1-2), classée 5e au pays. Laval a marqué 43 buts en 11 parties cet automne ce qui n’est guère rassurant pour l’excellente gardienne Chelsea-Lyn Aboud sur qui les Lady Gaiters ont pu compter à nouveau cette saison.

Il sera intéressant de voir si Bishop’s pourra profiter de la fatigue de son adversaire qui disputera un deuxième match en autant de jour.

Finalement, les Lady Gaiters disputeront leur dernière joute de la saison ce dimanche à 13h en accueillant les Martlets de McGill (8-0-3) dont la défensive n’a alloué qu’un but à l’adversaire en 11 parties cet automne.

Un dernier week-end à domicile avant les séries

Les Gaiters (7-0) disputeront leurs derniers matchs de la saison régulière ce week-end en accueillant la visite de Laurier ce samedi à 13h avant de faire face à Guelph dimanche à 13h également. Les deux rencontres seront présentées au parc Optimiste de l’arrondissement Lennoxville à Sherbrooke.

Avec une victoire, les Gaiters pourraient s’assurer du premier rang et ainsi accéder directement à la ronde demi-finale le week-end prochain lors de la Coupe Baggattaway qui aura lieu à Toronto.
