Bishop’s Gaiters Weekend Recap
Men and Women's Rugby Teams Sweep Sherbrooke

Oct. 2, 2006 – It was a successful homecoming weekend for the Bishop's Gaiters men's and women's rugby teams as they swept cross-town rivals Sherbrooke with a pair of victories on Friday evening.

Men's Rugby

After falling in overtime to Sherbrooke in their first game of the season, the Gaiters got a measure of revenge on Friday evening defeating the Vert & Or in an impressive fashion, 31-10.

Mike Orlando of Toronto, Ontario had two tries while Matt Gagnon of Ottawa, Jeffrey Farrell of Oakville and James Le Huguet of Brockville added had a try apiece. Toronto's Matt Studley also added six points by converting two penalty goals.

Samuel Campell of Toronto was also crucial to the Gaiters win as he played well on both sides of the ball. Campbell used his speed and athleticism to control the tempo of the game on offense and shut down the Vert & Or's offense.

The Gaiters (2-3) now have a bye-week before visiting the ETS Piranhas (0-5) on Friday October 13th.

Women's Rugby

The Lady Gaiters picked up their first win of the season on Friday evening, defeating Sherbrooke 12-0 to earn rookie head coach Eryn Hessian her first win at the University level.

Cailin McCulloch of Orleans, Ont., and Caroline Banning of Ottawa, Ont., scored two tries for the Lady Gaiters. McCulloch also added a convert for the Bishop's.

“I feel great, but more for the girls than for me,” said Hessian at the end of the game. “They've worked hard all season long and I’m hard on them sometimes, especially when we lose. But they've worked so hard that they deserve the victory.”

“Having Cailin back at inside center and rookie Katrina McClary at fly half gave McCulloch the space she needed to run and find the gaps she is known for crashing through. Her efforts on defense got the backline into the Vert & Or backline and the pressure caused them to make many mistakes,” added Hessian.

The Lady Gaiters will enjoy a bye-week before travelling to Quebec City to take on the Laval Rouge et Or in their regular season finale. Bishop's (1-3) can still qualify for the playoffs if they defeat Laval (4-0) and Ottawa (1-3) losses to Sherbrooke (0-4).

Golf

The Bishop's University golf team enjoyed their best performance of the year this weekend at the QSSF Championships in Trois-Rivieres, finishing in fourth place behind Laval, UQTR and Montreal.

Ryan Storrar (83, 79 = 162) was the Gaiters top performer, finishing in 21st place overall. Trevor Dunn (81, 84 = 165), meanwhile, finished in 28th place while Aaron Stowe (84, 82 = 166) and Alex Aubry (83, 86 = 169) finished in 30th and 39th place respectively.

Women's Soccer

The Bishop’s Lady Gaiters soccer team lost a pair of games this past weekend against two nationally ranked top ten teams.

Friday night, Bishop’s lost 6-0 at Montreal against the second-ranked McGill Martlets. The Lady Gaiters were behind 2-0 before the Martlets scored four goals in the last 10 minutes of play.

Sunday afternoon in Quebec City, the Lady Gaiters improved their execution, however, the team just could not muster any offense against the sixth-ranked Laval Rouge et Or losing by a 4-0 score. Laval made the game into a rout with two goals in the final two minutes of play.

The Lady Gaiters (0-5-1) will go after their first win of the season this fall when they play host to the UQTR Patriotes (0-5-1) this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Wilson Soccer Pitch located next to the W.B. Scott rink. Then the Lady Gaiters will return to Trois Rivieres on Monday afternoon for a 1 p.m. re-match with les Patriotes.

Lacrosse

The Gaiters easilly defeated the visiting Trent Excaliburs 18 - 4 in an exhibition match-up on Saturday afternoon.

The Gaiters will be travelling to Pittsburgh next weekend to take part in a tournament involving several American and Canadian university and college teams.

Bilan du week-end des Gaiters de l’Université Bishop’s
Les deux formations de rugby des Gaiters l’emportent sur Sherbrooke

3 octobre 2006 – C’était week-end de retrouvailles à l’Université Bishop’s et les deux équipes de rugby n’ont pas déçu les amateurs présents vendredi dernier, soutirant des victoires aux dépends du Vert & Or de l’Université de Sherbrooke.

Rugby masculin
La formation masculine de rugby de l’Université Bishop’s a vengé sa défaite crève-cœur subie en ouverture de saison face au Vert & Or de Sherbrooke en l’emportant cette fois-ci de façon très convaincante au compte de 31-10.

Mike Orlando, de Toronto, Ont., a inscrit deux essai tandis que Matt Gagnon, d’Ottawa, Ont., Jeffrey Farrell, d’Oakville, Ont., et James Le Huguet, de Brockville, Ont., en marquait un chacun. Matthew Studley, Toronto, Ont., a pour sa part réalisé six points par l’entremise de deux but de pénalité.

Samuel Campbell, de Toronto, Ont., a été un joueur dominant du côté des Gaiters tant en offensive qu’en défensive. Campbell a pu utiliser sa vitesse à profusion afin de créer des revirements chez l’adversaire de part sa lecture du jeu.

Les Gaiters (2-3) profiteront d’un week-end de repos avant de recevoir la visite des Piranhas de l’ETS (0-5) le vendredi 13 octobre.

Rugby féminin
Les Lady Gaiters ont enfin goûté à la victoire en blanchissant les représentantes de l’Université de Sherbrooke au compte de 12-0, procurant du même coup à l’entraîneure Eryn Hessian sa première victoire au niveau universitaire canadien.

Cailin McCulloch, de Beaconsfield, Qc., et Caroline Banning, d’Ottawa, Ont., ont inscrit les deux essais pour Bishop’s. McCulloch a de plus ajouté un converti.

Les Lady Gaiters seront également en pause le week-end prochain et termineront leur saison régulière en visitant le Rouge et Or de l’Université Laval le samedi 14 octobre.

Pour participer aux séries, Bishop’s (1-3) devra vaincre Laval (4-0) et espérer une défaite d’Ottawa (1-3) contre Sherbrooke (0-4).

Golf
Les golfeurs de l’Université Bishop’s ont connu leurs meilleurs moments de la saison en profitant du Championnat universitaire provincial pour gagner trois rangs au classement et se hisser au quatrième échelon derrière l’Université Laval, l’UQTR et l’Université de Montréal.

Ryan Storrar (83, 79 = 162) a été le meilleur représentant chez les Gaiters avec une 21e place au championnat individuel. Trevor Dunn (81, 84 = 165) a pour sa part fini 28e. Leurs coéquipiers
Aaron Stowe (84, 82 = 166) et Alex Aubry (83, 86 = 169) ont quant à eux pris les 30e et 39e places.

Soccer féminin
Les Lady Gaiters ont subi deux défaites ce week-end face aux deux meilleurs équipes du circuit universitaires québécois.

Vendredi, Bishop’s a encaissé un revers de 6-0 face à McGill. Les représentantes de Bishop’s perdaient 2 à 0 à la mi-temps mais les Martlets ont enregistré pas moins de quatre buts lors des dix dernières minutes de jeu pour concrétiser leur victoire.

Dimanche, les Lady Gaiters ont donné du fil à retorde au Rouge et Or de l’Université Laval qui l’a emporté 4-0 marquant une paire de buts lors des deux dernières minutes de jeu.

Les porte-couleurs de l’Université Bishop’s (0-5-1) seront en quête d’un premier gain cet automne alors qu’elles recevront la visite des Patriotes de l’UQTR (0-5-1) samedi à 13h. Un match revanche est prévu deux jours plus tard, soit le lundi 9 octobre à 13h à Trois-Rivières.

Crosse
Samedi dernier, les Gaiters ont facilement vaincu à domicile l’Excalibur de Trent 18 à 4 dans un match hors-concours.

Les Gaiters se rendront à Pittsburgh le week-end prochain pour y prendre part à un tournoi réunissant plusieurs universités et collèges américains.
