Provincial Record setting game by Matt Gagnon helps Gaiters defeat ETS 87-0

Oct. 16, 2006 – The Gaiters (3-4) enjoyed a highly successful weekend, defeating the ETS Piranhas (0-8) 87-0 on Friday evening before falling 15-13 to the first-place Concordia Stingers (6-1) on Sunday afternoon.

In Friday evening's shutout win, Matt Gagnon set a new FQSE record by converting 11 tries against the Piranhas, breaking the previous record of nine set by McGill's Matthew De Graff in September of 2005.

Eric Sanderson also contributed, scoring a hat trick while Pat Whelan added two tries. The other Gaiters tries came courtesy of Adam Barrette, Jeffrey Farrell, Samuel Campbell, Chris Sawers, Sean McLelland, Mike Orlando and Ryan Lethbridge.

On Sunday, the Gaiters dropped a tough 15-13 decision to the Concordia Stingers.

After taking an early 3-0 lead, the Gaiters saw the Stingers score 12 unanswered points to take a 12-3 lead.

The Gaiters rebounded, however, when Scott MacDonald intercepted a Stinger pass and returned it 60 meters for a try to make the score 12-8.

The Gaiters would take a 13-12 lead shortly after on a spectacular play when Chris Sawers caught a ball in the air and felt in the Concordia’s end zone following a 60 meter kick by the Matt Gagnon.

Concordia would ultimately prevail, however, by capitalizing on several Gaiter penalties and converting a three-point penalty kick late in the game to take a 15-13 lead.

The Gaiters are currently the third ranked team in the conference and will finish their regular season next weekend when they visit the McGill Redmen (6-1).
