Home Sweet Homecoming
Gaiter Football Team set to take on 7th-ranked Concordia

Sept. 28, 2006 - A week after falling 29-0 to the top-ranked Laval Rouge et Or, the Bishop's Gaiters (1-2) will once again have their work cut out for them this weekend as they get set to host the 7th-ranked Concordia Stingers (3-0) in the school's annual Homecoming Game.

Despite the tough task at hand, head coach Leroy Blugh and the Gaiters appear confident heading into their match-up with the undefeated Stingers.

"We have had a great week of practice. We are getting healthier and playing with more intensity and with a sense of urgency," said coach Blugh at Thursday afternoon's Touchdown Club meeting.

The key to Saturday afternoon's match-up will be the ability of the Gaiters offense to move the ball against a very tough Concordia defense. Sophomore running-back Jamall Lee leads the conference in rushing with 120 yards per game while rookie fullback Tim Cronk has also been impressive, averaging 7.5 yards per carry.

Saturday afternoon will also mark the home debut of rookie signal caller Jesse Andrews who went 6 for 16 for 55 yards against Laval last week in his initial outing as a university quarterback.

"Jesse is a great athlete, possessing skills and poise to become a very good quarterback in our league," added Blugh.

Concordia, meanwhile, boasts the top defense in the Quebec conference, having surrendered only 26 points all season (8.7 points per game allowed.) Anchoring the Stingers defense is 2005 President's Trophy- winner linebacker Patrick Donovan, who leads the QUFL in tackles, as well as returning All-Canadian defensive backs Moe Sidibe and Sammy Okpro.

The Stingers offense is lead by 2005 QUFL MVP Scott Syvret at quarterback. Running back Andrew Hamilton ranks third in the conference in rushing and slot-back Nick Scissons led the conference in receiving yards a year ago.

Concordia, however, will have to face a tough Gaiters defense which was impressive against Laval's explosive offense a week ago. Rookie linebacker Dusty Burke ranks 4th in the QUFL in tackles and LB Kyle Jones (2nd Year), LB Hyacinthe Boule-Regnier (2nd Year), DB Cole Gehring (5th Year) and DL Dan McCullough are also enjoying a good season so far.
