Stacy Holder, a talented natural leader

Profile by Sean O'Neill
Oct. 27, 2005 - With thirteen rookies on their roster this season, the Bishop’s Lady Gaiters women’s soccer team has often had to approach the 2005 season with an understanding that success would not necessarily be measured in terms of wins and losses but in terms of how the young talent on the team matured and developed from game to game.

Needless to say, veteran leadership both on and off the field is essential to any rebuilding effort and in thrid-year defender Stacy Holder, Head Coach Michael Richardson has found a talented natural leader who has played a key role in helping the Lady Gaiters development process.

“Stacy reads the game well and is a natural athlete with exceptional pace. She is always tough on the tackle and never backs done from a challenge. The other coaches recognized this last year by choosing her as the BU team MVP on about seven occasions,” said Richardson about Stacy’s contribution to the Lady Gaiters on the field.

Stacy’s role on the Lady Gaiters, however, extends beyond what occurs on the field.

“Stacy is well liked by all the girls. Her naturally "goofy" sense of humour and infectious laugh helps ease the mood of many a tough practice session. She's also well known for always having a movie for the long road trips, although her taste in movies sometimes leaves something to be desired,” said Richardson.

The Social Sciences student from Toronto, Ontario, says that her approach to being a team leader is something she learned from her the players who were veterans earlier on in her career and adds that, given the circumstances surrounding the team this season, it was in many ways expected of her to “step- up” and help lead the team.

Stacy concedes that it is sometimes a challenge to strike a balance between academics and athletics, noting that with class and practice every day and games every weekend she always seems to be busy.

But Stacy also adds that she ‘loves’ the atmosphere at Bishop’s and is thankful that she has had the chance to come play for the Lady Gaiters.

“I’ve learned a lot from the coaches and the players here and hopefully I’m a better player now than I was when I came here. The team plays together well and continues to grow and I’m happy to be a part of that.’’

The Lady Gaiters season will come to a close this weekend. Stacy and her teamates will host UQTR (1-10) Saturday at noon before traveling to Montreal to face Concordia (7-4) on Sunday afternoon.
