Bishop’s soccer split weekend games
Gaiters defeat UQAM, lose to Montreal

By Mike Hickey, Special to the Record
Lennoxville, Sept. 20, 2005 - The new-look Bishop’s women’s soccer team split a pair of home games this weekend and the outcomes were predictable. The Gaiters blanked the UQAM Citadins 1-0 Thursday afternoon and then suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Montreal Carabins.

UQAM is one of the teams that Bishop’s needs to beat if they hope to land one of four playoff spots in the Quebec University Soccer League while the Carabins are traditionally one of the better teams not only in the Quebec circuit but on the national scene as well.

The Gaiters took advantage of a penalty kick to score the other goal Thursday as Lisa Wagner drilled in her third goal of the season to provide Bishop’s with all their offense they would need as captain Chelsea Aboud picked up the shutout.

Counting two exhibition games the defensive-minded Gaiters have scored three goals and all three have been scored by Wagner while Aboud has picked up two shutouts.

“It was a great start of the season for us,” head coach Michael Richardson said. “We played well together and it was a good team effort.”

It was a different outcome Sunday as the Carabins took advantage of some injuries to put the Gaiters away midway through the second half.

“We stayed with them for the first 20 minutes but then we had to make some injury substitutions and Montreal took advantage of it. They scored their first goal at the 25th minute mark ands that changed the whole game around.”

The Montreal offense scored four more goals on a wet muddy field but Richardson credited his team playing hard until the final whistle.

“I am proud of the fact that our players never gave us and worked hard the entire game,” Richardson said. “We didn’t know what to expect from Montreal; they had a new coach and in university ball a team change from one year to the next. But they are a very good team and battled them the whole time.”

The Gaiters will be busy this weekend when they play two more road games as part of the school’s Homecoming Weekend. On Friday the will meet the nationally ranked Laval Rouge et Or at 4:30 p.m. and then host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or Sunday afternoon as 1 p.m. With their first five league games at home the Gaiters need to take some points in the two games to stay in the hunt for the league playoffs.
