Impressive debut for Gaiters rookie skier
Freshman Lauren Bobby captures the first gold-medal of the season

Jan. 16, 2005 – The Bishop's University ski team kicked off the 2006 season in an impressive fashion over the weekend, capturing first place in Saturday's women's giant slalom while finishing third on Sunday. Bishop's men's team, meanwhile, finished the weekend in a respectable 4th place.

Only one run was held Saturday afternoon due to poor weather conditions at the Massif de la Petite-Rivière-Saint-François course. The rain, however, wasn't enough to slow down rookie Lauren Bobby (Timmins, On), who showed her tremendous talent by tying McGill's Megan Kidston for first place in the season's first giant slalom run with a time of 44.2 seconds.

Vancouver native Jennifer Bertram, who had won the last four giant slalom runs held at Le Massif, finished fifth with a time of 45.56 while rookie teammate Jennifer Post finished eigth with a time of 46.94. Katie Bruce (Dartmouth, N.S.) finished ninth with a time of 47.46 seconds.

With four skiers finishing in the top nine, Bishop's finished with 492.5 points, 74 more than second-place McGill who has captured the last six Quebec ski titles.

"With the addition of Lauren (Bobby) we knew that our women's team had a great chance," said ski coordinator Jean-Phillippe Tremblay. " We have alot of potential, brought in some talented rookies and should be even more competitive once Alicia Wood, who has the talent to consistently finish in the top 15, returns from her back injury."

On the men's side, rookie Graham Carr (Calgary, Alb.) was the Gaiters top performer, finishing fifth with a time of 43.98 seconds, 1.48 seconds behind the winner, Jocelyn Boily of Montreal.

Lauren Bobby continued her impressive performance Sunday, finishing in 4th place with a total time of 1:57.29, two seconds behind winner Megan Kidston. Jennifer Bertram (6th place), Jennifer Post (10th) and Katie Bruce (15th) were Bishop's other point-getters.

For the men, Carr was once again the Gaiters top performer, finishing his two runs in 6th place with a total time of 1:51.03. Rookie Ian Snowsell of Banff, Alberta finished in 13th (1:55.43). Nicolas Zyromski of McGill finished in first-place with a time of 1:46.13..

Jason Mawson (Toronto, On) finished 16th while Craig Mottershead (Kitchener, On), Patrick Corney (Dartmouth, N.S.), Rob Mackay (Toronto, On) and Jeffrey Stevens (Toronto, On) finished 21st, 24th, 25th and 26th respectively.

"It's encouraging to see our rookies perform well. If our skiers are able to finish most of their runs we should be able to compete with teams like Montreal, McGill and Laval, all of whom have very deep rosters," said Tremblay.

In total points (men's and women's), Bishop's finished the weekend in third place with 1645.5 points, behind only Montreal (1826) and McGill (1925.5)

The Lady Gaiters finished second with 879.5 points, 78 points behind first place McGill. The men currently find themselves in fourth place with 766 points, 280 points behind first place Montreal

In the individual rankings, Lauren Bobby finished her first weekend in the Quebec conference ranked second with 322.5 points, behind only Megan Kidston of McGill (387.5). Jennifer Bertram is currently ranked in fourth-place with 240 points.

For his part, Graham Carr is currently ranked in fourth place with 240 points. McGill's Nicolas Zyromski is currently in first place with a total of 375 points..

The Quebec university ski circuit will be in action again on January 28th and 29th at the Montcalm ski hill in Lanaudière, when two slalom competitions will take place.
