Bishop's ski-team seeks first title since 1999
University ski circuit's 34th season to get underway this weekend

Jan. 10, 2005 – With the 2006 Quebec university ski season set to begin this weekend in scenic Charlevoix, an undeniable sense of optimism and enthusiasm surrounds the Bishop's University ski team.

On the women's side, the Lady Gaiters will rely heavilly on the return of Jennifer Bertram (Vancouver, B.C.) who finished 2005 ranked 4th in the conference, one year after finishing 3rd in 2004. Bertram has captured the last four giant slalom tournaments held in Charlevoix.

Joining Bertram on the slopes this season will be veteran Katie Bruce (Dartmouth, N.S) and captain Alicia Wood (Aurora, Ont). Last season, Bruce and Wood finished the season ranked 10th and 13th in the conference respectively.

This trio will be further aided by the addition of rookie Lauren Bobby (Timmins, Ont), a former member of the Ontario provincial ski team. Lauren, who's sister Alyson competed for McGill and was finished 2005 ranked 2nd in Quebec, is expected to be a force to be reckoned with in the Quebec circuit this season with many observers expecting to see her reach the podium on several occasions this season. Lauren also competed for the Bishop's Lady Gaiters soccer team this past fall.

Another new addition to the Lady Gaiters ski-team is rookie Jennifer Post (Prevessin- Moens, France) who has been a competitive skier for several seasons.

On the men's side, the veteran Rob Mackay (Toronto, Ont.), who finished 24th in 2005, has been named the new captain of the Gaiters squad.

Mackay will be joined by Toronto's Jeremy Mawson (46th in 2005) and Halifax's Bentley Cross (56th in 2005.)

There will be several new faces on the men's team as well. John Atkinson (Toronto, Ont.), a former member of the national ski academy, leads the group of freshman recruits, which also includes Calgary's Graham Carr and Banff, Alberta's Ian Snowsell.
