Gaiters
basketball teams inactive for reading week as ski team set to travel to
Le Relais Feb.
23, 2006 – While both the men's and women's basketball teams will be on
hiatus for reading week as they prepare for the QUBL playoffs, the
Bishop's ski team will be in action this weekend when they travel to Le
Relais to compete in two slalom competitions.
Women's Basketball
Rod Gilpin's Lady Gaiter squad finished the 2005-2006 season with a
record of 13-3. Bishop's has been especially dominant since the
Christmas break, having won 10 of their 12 conference games since
January, guaranteeing themselves home-court advantage in the semi-finals
in the process. Bishop's will most likely finish the season in second
place in the five team conference unless first-place Laval losses both
of their weekend games.
The Lady Gaiters will spend their reading week preparing for their
semi-final matchup against either UQAM or McGill on Wednesday, March 1st
at 7:00 p.m.
Men's Basketball
After splitting last weekends games against UQAM and McGill, the
Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team finishes the season with a 9-7
record, a significant improvement over last seasons 3-13 finish.
Currently ranked third in the QUBL, Bishop's has to hope for either
Concordia or McGill to defeat the Laval Rouge et Or this weekend in
order for the Gaiters to finish the season in second place.
While the Gaiters final ranking may still be undetermined, one thing
that is for sure is that Bishop's will face Laval in the conference
semi-finals on Friday, March 3rd. The location of the match will be
based on which team finishes the season ranked second in the conference.
This season, Bishop's defeated the Rouge et Or in three out of four
meetings.
Alpine Skiing
The fourth and second to last event on the Quebec university ski circuit
will take place this weekend at the Le Relais ski resort in Quebec where
two slalom competitions will be held.
The Lady Gaiters ski team will be helped by the return of rookie
Jennifer Post (Prevessin-Moens, France) who was unable to compete at the
last two events held at Sutton due to a virus. Post returns to action as
the 13th ranked skier on the Quebec circuit.
Joining Post on the slopes will be teammates
Lauren Bobby (Timmins, On), Jennifer Bertram (Vancouver, B.C.) and Katie
Bruce (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) who are currently ranked 4th, 7th and
10th respectively.
Slalom specialist and Lady Gaiter captain Alicia Wood (Aurora, On) will
be hoping to pick up some much needed points this weekend after having
only completed two races thus far.
Rookies Graham Carr (12th) of Calgary and Ian Snowsell (24th) of Banff
are the top ranked Gaiter men on the Quebec circuit. |
