Another busy weekend for Bishop's Athletes

Feb. 9, 2006 – It will be another eventful weekend for the Bishop's University Athletic Department. Both the men's and women's basketball teams will host the Concordia Stingers on Friday evening before travelling to face the UQAM Citadins on Saturday, while the Bishop's ski team will be in Sutton to compete in two slalom competitions.

Women's Basketball
After going a perfect 6-0 in the month of January, the Bishop's Lady Gaiters basketball team (9-3) did not enjoy a succesful start to the month of February, getting swept by McGill and Laval a week ago.

With four games left to be played in the regular season, Bishop's can clinch second-place in the conference and home-court advantage in the semi-finals with a pair of wins this weekend.

Bishop's has gone undefeated against Concordia this season, with their last meeting on January 27th ending in a 72-50 win for the Lady Gaiters. Bishop's is also undefeated in their two games against UQAM this season and has never lost to the Citadins in their three year existence.

Men's Basketball
The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team (7-5) enters this weekend hoping to regain the winning edge that they had earlier on in the season. After starting off the season with a 6-1 record, the Gaiters have slumped as of late, losing four of their last five.

On Friday, Eddie Pomykala's crew will host the first-place Concordia Stingers (10-2). Concordia has won two straight against the Gaiters, including a 69-60 win in Lennoxville two weeks ago.

On Saturday, Bishop's will travel to Montreal to face the UQAM Citadins for the third time this season. UQAM won the first meeting between the two teams 80-63 while Bishop's defeated UQAM 86-71 in the second meeting.

After having led the QSSF with a 6-1 record earlier on in the season, the Gaiters have dropped to third place behind Concordia and Laval. Bishop's can still finish ahead of Laval and earn home-court advantage in the semi-finals, however, if the two teams finish with identical records because the Gaiters took the season series against the Rouge et Or three games to one.

" We need to play inspired basketball this weekend. We played excellent defense in our two losses last week but it's crucial that we start shooting the ball more effectively," said Head Coach Eddie Pomykala, who also added that his team must cut down on its turnovers.

Alpine Skiing
The third weekend of the Quebec University ski circuit is scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at Mount Sutton in the Eastern Townships where two slalom competitions will be held. Bishop's and the University of Sherbrooke are co-hosting the event.

The second place Lady Gaiters will be hoping to use this weekend to gain on the first place McGill Martlets while at the same time distancing themselves from third place Montreal, which trails Bishop's by only a few points.

The Lady Gaiters will be led by slalom specialist Jennifer Bertram (Vancouver, B.C) who captured two bronze medals at Sutton last year. The fifth-ranked Bertram will be joined by rookie Lauren Bobby of Timmins, Ontario who is currently ranked third in the conference.

On the men's side, Bishop's is led by Calgary native Graham Carr who is currenty ranked ninth on the circuit. Carr has fared well in the slalom so far this season, finishing in fifth and sixth place in his two slalom runs thus far.
