Bishop's garners 30 impact rectruits for 2006 season

May 23, 2006 – Head coach Leroy Blugh and the rest of the Bishop’s University coaching staff are pleased with their recruiting efforts over the last several months.

According to Blugh, who is entering his second year as the Gaiters’ head coach, 30 impact recruits have committed to Bishop’s for the upcoming fall.

Leading the list of candidates who are expected to take the field for the Gaiters season opener against the McGill Redmen on September 9th are offensive lineman Mike Berta from London, Ontario, running back Tim Cronk of Kingston and Elias Soueti, a defensive lineman from Ottawa. All three players played for Team Canada at the World Junior Football Championships held in Detroit last January.

''This is an outstanding recruiting class. We will get help at positions we needed to improve. A number of these young men will be able to step in and contribute this September,'' states Blugh, who played for the Edmonton Eskimos and the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League.

“We will be more competitive and more consistent base with this year recruiting class. We have more depth in our roster and quality players.''

Among the new signings are two members of the Champlain College Cougars, offensive lineman Philip Sauer and defensive back Neven Szary.

The list also includes five transfers from other Canadian universities who have decided to attend Bishop’s for the 2006 campaign. The transfers include Antoine Terrelong from Mount Allison University, defensive lineman Greg Lewzcuk and defensive backs Dusty Burke and John Braddock all from Saint Mary’s and defensive halfback Jermaine Blake from Concordia.

“Some of these like Mike Berta, Frank Aiello, Tim Cronk, Steven Turner, Jeff Hildreth, Shawn Gore and more could start for any teams in the country. These kids will also open the doors for other great student athletes to aspire to come to Bishop's'', states Blugh.
