McCullough, Chown, Mabee and Mailloux selected to East-West Bowl

March 30, 2006 – Dan McCullough, Matt Chown, Steven Mabee and Kevin Mailloux of the Bishop's University football team have been invited to participate in the fourth annual East-West Bowl. Gaiter head coach Leroy Blugh and defensive coordinator Marc Loranger will also be a part of the East coaching staff. The fourth edition of the East-West Bowl will be presented in Quebec city in May 2006.

This event, organized in partnership with the CFL and NFL, will bring together 90 of the top University football players in the country for a week of practices, evaluation and activities, culminating in the East-West Bowl game at 1:00pm on Saturday, May 13, at PEPS Stadium of Laval University.

"We're extremely proud to have three of our players represent our program at the East-West Bowl," said Gaiter head coach Leroy Blugh.

This marks the second time that McCullough, a third-year defensive lineman from Fredericton, NB., has been selected to play in the East-West Bowl. Last fall, the former Champlain has been selected to the 2005 Quebec University Football League All-Star team. He was the heart and soul of the Gaiters defense, recording 38.5 tackles, 28 of them solo, the most among Gaiters defenders.

"Last year I was a bit overwhelmed by the whole situation. I didn't feel entirely ready but this year I know what to expect and I know what it takes. My goal this year is to play well and get some recognition by pro scouts."

McCullough's linemate, third-year Social Science major Matt Chown, from Richmond Hill, On., is also headed to the East-West Bowl for the second consecutive year.

"I expect to do better than last year. I'm happy to be going back as getting another invite to the game was one of my personal goals this season."

Steven Mabee, a second-year offensive lineman from Saint-Bruno, Qc., was also looking forward to participating in the East-West Bowl.

"I'm very excited and I'm looking forward to the oppurtunity. I don't really know what to expect, but I'm hoping it goes well. I'm also really looking forward to the next season. Spring practice is going well and the coaches have this team headed in the right direction and we have alot of good recruits coming in who should help the program continue to improve."

East-West Bowl information
Following the tradition, the East and West teams will be coached by the head coaches from the Vanier Cup finalists. The East team will be coached by Gary Jeffries of the Vanier Cup champions Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks. The West team will be headed by Brian Towriss of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

The event will be held over a period of 6 days, from May 8 to the 13. Both teams will hold separate practices in the morning and joint practices in the afternoon, all of which will be open to the public.

In addition, numerous activities will be organized throughout the week. The Reebok Practice with the Players event, the East-West Bowl Banquet and a Coaches Clinic are some of the activities that will contribute to make this event a true celebration of football.

With the wide fan base from the Rouge et Or and the ever-growing popularity of football in the province of Quebec, the East-West Bowl Organising Committee is optimistic the event will create a lot of excitement. The East-West Bowl will also give the players and coaches the chance to live a unique experience and will provide a great opportunity to showcase Canadian University Football.
