Leroy Blugh selected to the Edmonton Eskimo All-Century Team

Nov. 9, 2005 – Former CFL defensive star and current Bishop’s Gaiters Head Coach Leroy Blugh was recently selected to the Edmonton Eskimo’s All-Century team.

As part of the centennial celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the province of Alberta, the Eskimo’s announced their plans to unveil their All-Century team earlier in the season and gave fans the chance to vote online for their favorite players of the last 100 years. Chosen along with 28 other Edmonton immortals, Blugh says he is honoured by the selection.

“It’s a tremendous honour to be recognized in such a manner, especially by the fans,” said Blugh, who enjoyed a 15 year CFL career which included 11 years in Edmonton. “I loved my time playing in Edmonton and the fans there were always great.”

“The relationships I developed with my teammates and with the city of Edmonton in general will always stay with me. There is a great deal of tradition behind the franchise. The team never shuttled players in and out on a continual basis which allowed the players to develop extremely strong bonds with the community.”

Originally, a native of St. Vincent and Grenadine, Leroy and his family moved to Napanee, Ontario when he was five years old. The thirty-eight-year old Blugh became head football coach of the Bishop's Gaiters last spring.

Blugh enjoyed an exceptionally successful career at Bishop's during the late 80's. The former linebacker was chosen to the CIAU All Canadian team on three occasions and capped that off with the President's Trophy in 1988 as the Best Defensive Player in Canada. Blugh was also chosen the Best Defensive Player in the OQIFC three consecutive seasons.

As a result, Blugh was drafted by the Canadian Football League in the first round in 1989 by the Edmonton Eskimos where he enjoyed an eleven year career which included one Grey Cup championship in 1993. In 1996, Blugh won the prestigious Schenley Award given to the league's best Canadian player. All told, Blugh played for fifteen seasons in the CFL, finishing his career with the Toronto Argonauts in 2003. He played as linebacker and as a defensive lineman.

During his CFL career, Blugh was selected to the Western Conference All-Star team on three occasions and was also selected twice as a CFL All Canadian.
