A Crucial Game For The Gaiters
Leroy Blugh’s Squad to Host
McGill This Saturday at 1:00
Lennoxville, Oct. 11, 2005 – The Bishop’s
Gaiters (0-5) will host the McGill Redmen (1-4) this Saturday, October
15th in what will be a crucial contest for both teams as the loser will
automatically be excluded from postseason play.
The Gaiters slim playoff hopes rest on them
defeating McGill and Acadia (2-3) and then defeating cross- town rivals
Sherbrooke (2-3) by 20 points or more in the regular season finale on
October 29th.
For their part, McGill needs a win against Bishop’s as well as wins over
#1 ranked Laval (5-0) and #6 ranked Concordia (4-1) in order to qualify
for the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Sherbrooke, which currently occupies the final playoff spot,
is set to face Laval and St. FX (4-1) before facing Bishop’s in their
final regular season game.
“We are aware that we still have a shot at the postseason,” says Head
Coach Leroy Blugh, “but our objective has not changed since the
beginning of the season, and that is to take our season one game at a
time and play each game as if it were our last.”
Leroy
Blugh’s rookie season has seen his team play one of the toughest
schedules in the country, with each of their last four defeats coming at
the hands of a nationally ranked opponent. Nonetheless, the Gaiters, who
are the youngest team in the country, managed to put in solid
performances against both Concordia and Montreal, only giving up a
combined 14 second-half points in their three games against the two
schools.
Coach Blugh believes that one key aspect that the Gaiters need to
improve on in order to win is their performance on first down on both
sides of the ball.
Another key for Bishop’s on Saturday will be exploiting McGill’s
defensive line which has allowed 173 rushing yards a game, worst in the
conference. The Gaiters, despite having the lowest ranked rushing attack
in the conference, can nonetheless rely on rookie sensation Jamall Lee
who, in his last three starts, has rushed for 72, 125 and 97 yards
respectively.
Another key player to watch out for on Saturday will be McGill
quarterback Matt Connell, who is averaging a league-best 313 yards
passing a game and is widely considered to be one of the top
signal-callers in the country.
The Bishop’s-McGill game is set for 1:00 this Saturday and will be
played at Coulter Field in Lennoxville. |
